Dr. Mitch Land and his wife were on their way to Dallas-Fort Worth airport to pick up his son’s family joining them for a delayed Christmas celebration when he got a startling text from his daughter.

“Tornadoes have taken our house,” the text read. A terrible feeling gripped his heart, the same feeling he had several years ago after his son was hit and killed by a drunk driver, he conveyed to CBN News.

This can’t be real, he thought.

His daughter texted back and said, “Yes, it’s true. The lights went out at the house and it is completely dark but the roof is gone over the study and windows shattered in the master bedroom.”

She informed him that her house across the street in Rowlett, Texas, was completely destroyed.

The reason for Dr. Land’s grave concern was he and his wife left 22 family members at the house when they headed to the airport, including his 82-year-old mother. They had four generations under one roof when the tornado bore down with incredible fury.

Dr. Mitch Land is dean of the School of Communication and the Arts at Regent University.

“Driving in the car I didn’t know how many were going to be alive, how many were going to be dead or injured. When we got to the house we wept with joy that God had spared them,” he told CBN.

“The sheer joy – that I didn’t have to bury another child – was overwhelming. We just wept with joy that God spared our children; we were grateful to the Lord.”

After they embraced with tears, Dr. Land learned the terrifying details of the near-disaster.

“They heard the sirens and they thought, it’s just the sirens…sometimes those things go off. They didn’t really believe it. They looked outside and saw things getting unusually dark really quick.”

They heard wind noise and thought it was just another storm. They heard the sirens five minutes before the

tornado struck.

All 22 crammed into a 15-foot-long hallway between the kitchen and the garage.

“My son-in-law hovered over my 82 year old mother and his grandmother and tried to shelter one of his children. Doors were trying to fly open. The older grandchildren held on to those doors for dear life. One of them almost got sucked out of the house,” he told CBN.

“They were crying out to God, praying for safety. The kids were screaming and shaking and my mother was absolutely terrified.”

“Had any of those kids not been in that space they might easily have been taken.”

“My daughter and son-in-law across the street’s house was completely destroyed. If they had been in their bedroom they would have been killed. Their roof was torn off and everything in that room was sucked out of the house.
