American Pastor Saeed Abedini has been released from imprisonment in Iran, along with three other US citizens

‘This is an answer to prayer’ says his wife, Naghmeh

By Dan Wooding, Founder of the ASSIST News Service (Breaking News)

IRAN (ANS – January 16, 2016) – After more than three years of brutal imprisonment in Iran for his Christian activities, Pastor Saeed Abedini, 35, has become a free man and will soon be reunited with his wife and two children in the United States.

The Abedini familyThree other US citizens have also been released, including Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian, 39, who was convicted of espionage in Iran last year, as well as Amir Hekmati and Nosratollah Khosravi.

It is believed they were released as Iran anticipates the lifting of international sanctions.

According to the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), who has been representing the Abedini family, Pastor Saeed had initially been taken from his prison cell to Iran’s Central Intelligence agency on Friday (January 15, 2016), and was freed today (Saturday, January 16, 2016).

“We’re delighted this day has finally arrived,” said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel of the ACLJ. “Pastor Saeed should never have been imprisoned in the first place. He spent more than three years in an Iranian prison. We’re grateful for the millions of people who have stood with us in our ongoing efforts—both in this country and abroad—to secure his release.

“We have worked and prayed that this day would finally arrive. And now, Pastor Saeed can return home.”

Nagmah and Saeed AbediniOn hearing the news, Pastor Saeed’s crusading wife Naghmeh, responded: “This has been an answer to prayer. This is a critical time for me and my family. We look forward to Saeed's return and want to thank the millions of people who have stood with us in prayer during this most difficult time.”

News reports say that the four were swapped for seven Iranians held in US prisons, but there was no immediate US confirmation. The Iranian state news agency listed the seven as Nader Modanlo, Bahram Mechanic, Khosrow Afghani, Arash Ghahreman, Tooraj Faridi, Nima Golestaneh and Ali Saboun.

In addition, Iranian state TV said 14 Iranians sought by the US would be removed from an Interpol wanted list.

News of the releases came after Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif predicted that international sanctions against his country would be lifted on Saturday.

He is in Vienna for talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry over Iran's nuclear deal.

The international nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, is expected to confirm that Iran has scaled back its atomic activities in line with the agreement.

Billions of dollars of frozen Iranian assets are expected to be released and the sale of Iranian oil on the world market will again be permitted.

Saeed Abedini, who was born on May 7, 1980 in Iran and is a convert to Christianity, was arrested in 2012 and convicted the next year on charges of attempting to undermine the Iranian government. He had been sentenced to eight years in prison.

His arrest came three years after he had previously been arrested by Iranian authorities and later released after agreeing to stop organizing churches in homes. His 2012 arrest came during a trip to help build a state-run secular orphanage.

The ACLJ reported that Abedini has endured torture during his imprisonment and was beaten by fellow prisoners in June. He suffered injuries to his face during that incident, the center reported.

The Abedini family, which also includes children Rebekka and Jacob, have a home in Boise, Idaho, but it is not yet known where Saeed will go to, as the family will want time together before meeting the media the media.

Speaking Monday from a hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, Saeed shared his thanks in a phone conversation with Jay Sekulow, Chief Legal Counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice.

"He wished to express to everyone who has really engaged on his behalf across the country and across the world his immense gratitude," the ACLJ's Matt Clark told CBN News. "He just wanted to express to Jay, to the ACLJ, to the members, to all those who have been praying and been advocating, been signing petitions... he just wanted to express his immense gratitude."

More than 1.1 million people signed petitions for Saeed's release at the ACLJ website. Clark called his freedom "a tremendous victory, the prayers of many millions across the world have been answered."

With Saeed's freedom won, the ACLJ will now turn its attention to helping other Christians who are still suffering persecution around the globe.

"We were brought on board to do two things: to keep him alive as we advocated for his freedom, for his release and now he is released and so now we move on to the next case," Clark said. "There are hundreds and thousands who are still imprisoned for their Christian beliefs today. There is genocide going on in the Middle East and those are the things that we will continue to press forward with as we engage in our international advocacy for the persecuted Church."

The ACLJ worked on Saeed's behalf for nearly the entire time he was imprisoned, meeting with world leaders, advocating at the United Nations and working with members of Congress. The group also helped arrange a meeting with President Obama in 2015 for Naghmeh Abedini where she asked the president to do more to see her husband set free.

After Years of Demonic Abuse, Pastor Saeed's True Condition Revealed

Saeed Abedini meets with Repttenger Saeed Abedini meets with Rep. Pittenger (Courtesy/CBN)

Pastor Saeed Abedini is in good physical, spiritual, and emotional health just a few days after his release from an Iranian prison, Rep. Robert Pittenger told CBN News.

Pittenger met with Abedini Tuesday afternoon. The two men talked and prayed together for about an hour-and-a-half.

"His spirits are great. He looked in good physical health," Pittenger said. "I think he's come out of it very well, mentally, physically, emotionally—he's engaged."

The North Carolina congressman flew to Landstuhl, Germany, as part of a delegation to meet Abedini and three other freed Americans. He's been a public advocate for the pastor's release since 2013.

For the most part, Saeed was kept in isolation, but in the past six months the Iranians began to give him better food and treatment.

Pittenger believes that's because they planned to release him once the Obama administration's nuclear deal with Iran was finalized.

"I think the Iranians had probably predetermined they were going to be releasing him, so they took good care of him, I think, the last six months," Pittenger said. "I think they treated him very well and fed him well to make sure he was fattened up and looked good."

Abedini is unsure of his immediate plans but is seeking God's will for his life and his future.

"He is very close to the Lord, we had a wonderful time of prayer. He senses God's calling on his life and he wants to please Him by way of his life and his family first," Pittenger said.

"He prayed very sincerely that he wants to be God's person and he wanted to be responsive to His will in his life and wants to be the caring husband that he desires to be," he said.

The Abedini family faces difficulties upon his return. Saeed's wife, Naghmeh, revealed recently they have struggled in their marriage. An email alleging emotional and verbal abuse by Saeed was published in media reports last year.

Naghmeh admits there will be difficult days ahead as the family seeks a time of healing.

"The reality is that we are not heroes. Jesus is the only hero. He is our only example, and we are broken people with issues," she told CBN News hours after her husband's release.

Pittenger took a pastoral tone when addressing the circumstances.

"It stands in the hand of a healing Jesus. Jesus is in the business of reconstruction," he said. "We come as imperfect vessels to the throne and the grace of God. ... I know he desires to be with his family and be right by the Lord and be right by them, and as I said this is a healing process."

Earlier, Pittenger told CBN News that this phase is very critical for the released prisoners.

"They've come out of a very oppressive environment where they were, for the most part, left in isolation—had a lot of mental torture—and this will take time to process out and help them," he said.

"They've been in a very demonic atmosphere and it's been very oppressive," he said. "The transition in their life is going to be extraordinary. So, just being able to communicate, be back with their families, is going to be a real challenge. This is going to be a very hard process."

Pittenger has been calling for Abedini's freedom since 2013. Evangelist Franklin Graham, who heads the Charlotte-based Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, played a role in enlisting him to the cause.

"Franklin has been a good friend of Mrs. Abedini's through this period. I was encouraged to get involved because of Franklin and also because of Dr. David Chadwick in Charlotte, the pastor of Forest Hill Church. So my interest is there because they asked me to get involved," he said.
