House Fails to Override Veto to Defund Planned Parenthood

by News Staff : Feb 3, 2016 : CBN News

"We are standing for righteousness. We're standing for truth. We're standing for the lives of the unborn. And we're standing for a budget that is one that will bring accountability to our government." -Rep. Robert Pittenger, speaking on the symbolic nature of the bill

Tuesday's vote was an attempt to override Obama's veto last month on a bill to gut Obamacare and end federal payments to Planned Parenthood.

Even before the scheduled vote, GOP lawmakers did not appear to have the necessary two-thirds majority to override a presidential veto. Yet, to many, like Rep. Robert Pittenger, R-NC, the vote was symbolic.

Pittenger told CBN News the vote gave conservatives an opportunity to draw a distinction between their priorities versus the priorities of the Democrats.

"We want to make it very clear to the American people where we stand and where the president stands. That's why we put this on his desk," he said.

"We want them to know that we are standing for righteousness. We're standing for truth. We're standing for the lives of the unborn. And we're standing for a budget that is one that will bring accountability to our government and that's what we're about," he added.

Speaker Paul Ryan, R-WI, said the effort would send an important signal.

"What we're proving today is if we have a Republican president next year, we will repeal Obamacare," Ryan told reporters.

Pro-life Activists Fight to Keep Indicted Filmmaker Out of Prison

02-04-2016  Paul Strand

WASHINGTON – David Daleiden, the undercover filmmaker responsible for exposing Parenthood's trafficking in fetal body parts, now faces legal trouble himself.

That's why other activists like Rev. Pat Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition, have rushed to Houston to support Daleiden as he heads into court to appear before a judge.

The grand jury that indicted Daleiden and his colleague, Sandra Merritt, were empaneled to find out if Planned Parenthood had committed crimes brought to light by Daleiden's undercover videos.  So it was truly a strange turn when that grand jury let Planned Parenthood off scot-free and went after Daleiden and Merritt instead.

Mahoney and his allies are calling for Harris Country District Attorney Devon Anderson to drop the charges, one of which is a felony charge that could land Daleiden in prison for up to 20 years.   His crime?   Carrying a fake I.D., a normal practice of undercover journalists.

Mahoney, who met with CBN News on Capitol Hill before he headed to Houston, called this indictment laughable and embarrassing.

"David Daleiden is not the first person to have a driver's license say something else as a journalist to go undercover to follow a story," Mahoney insisted.

Charmaine Yoest, of Americans United for Life, believes Daleiden's videos on Planned Parenthood's fetal tissue trade are damning and hurt the abortion provider.   Some in the pro-life community suggest it and its allies may feel they have to strike back.

"What our attorneys found was six different areas of potential felonies that are documented on the tapes very extensively," Yoest told CBN News.

Mahoney argued the district attorney has too many pro-abortion connections.

"Devon Anderson, her biggest political supporter financially, is the attorney for the largest late-term abortion provider in that region," Mahoney remarked.

Speaking of the videos' effect, Yoest revealed, "There are six different congressional investigations going on, including the select committee investigating Planned Parenthood."

So Yoest pointed out the Houston grand jury going after the accuser, not the accused, is odd – like it's charging him with trying to buy what Planned Parenthood was selling.

"That David would be indicted for attempting to buy human tissue and yet those who stand accused of selling it are not being investigated in Houston," Yoest said.

"You should never have law enforcement use their office for a political agenda, and that's exactly what's happening here," Mahoney stated.

Dustin Siggiins, a correspondent for LifeSiteNews, has been following Daleiden's case.

"David has sent out statements saying what he has done is the exact same as every other undercover journalist in the past," Siggins explained.  "So there's a concern here by some people about the chilling of free speech, the chilling of journalism in America."

Mahoney added, "I think people need to understand that: he's looking at 20 years in prison for this."

Siggins' LifeSiteNews and others have gathered multitudes of petitions supporting Daleiden.

"Just about a 110,000 people are encouraging Anderson to drop charges, which under law she can do," Siggins said.

Shaking his head in disbelief, Mahoney shared, "This is the first time in history that a grand jury was empaneled and is bringing charges with a 20-year penalty for a driver's license – a fake ID on a driver's license for this journalistic story."

Those in the pro-life community are wondering if this is an escalation by those in the abortion industry and their allies to make pro-life crusaders pay for their activism -- possibly with years in prison.
