John
Hopkins Hospital: "Transgenderism is Mental Illness"
Dr.
Paul McHugh, Distinguished Service Professor at Johns Hopkins University and
former psychiatrist-in-chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital says transgenderism and
sex-reassignment surgery is a "mental illness"---and to enable it is
"collaborating with madness."
Why, then, is our president and the secular
progressive Left "enabling" when those who are gender confused desperately need
help? Is there some reason why President Obama and the Progressive Left are
standing against the science? Doctor McHugh describes transgenderism as a make
believe world---a fantasy world.
The secular Progressive Left is obsessed with marginalizing
the "far right"---especially biblical Christians, as uncaring and uninformed in
regard to their assault on common sense, and morality related to the current
"bathroom" fiasco.
It appears it's the secular Progressive Left that's
uninformed.
Dr. Paul R. McHugh in his book, "The Mind Has
Mountains: Reflections on Society and Psychiatry," reflects on a
lifetime of work as a psychiatrist.
His reflections and insights are
coming from the medical, not necessarily the moral or biblical point of view,
yet his insights affirm the profound Truth of God's Word on the issue.
Dr
McHugh says, "The HRC [Human Rights Campaign, a homosexual advocacy
organization] defines 'gender identity' as 'one's internal concept of self as
male, female, a blend of both, or neither' regardless of the one's anatomy and
chromosomal makeup---XX female, XY Male."
He says, "I have witnessed a
great deal of damage from sex-reassignment. The children transformed from their
male constitution into female roles suffered prolonged distress and misery as
they sensed their natural attitudes as males develop."
"As for the adults
who came to us [at Johns Hopkins] claiming to have discovered their 'true'
sexual identity and to have heard about sex-change operations, we psychiatrists
have been distracted from studying the causes and natures of their mental
misdirections by preparing them for surgery and for a life in the other sex," he
said.
Doctor McHugh describes transgenderism as a make believe world---a
fantasy world.
Speaking of men he says, "The post-surgical subjects
struck me as caricatures of women. They wore high heels, copious makeup, and
flamboyant clothing...but their large hands, prominent Adam's apples... and
thick facial features were incongruous (and would become more so as they
aged)."
He and other doctors have noted that these men, prior to surgery
"spent an unusual amount of time thinking and talking about sex and their sexual
experiences---they were preoccupied with it."
He says, "This form of
'sexual misdirection' is termed 'autogynephilia'."
Dr.
McHugh writes in his chapter on "surgical sex" that they saw 2 kinds of men who
sought the surgeries.
One
group consisted of guilt-ridden homosexual men who saw a sex change as a way to
resolve their conflicts over homosexuality by allowing them to behave sexually
as females with men, and the other group were men who became aroused by wearing
women's clothing.
The doctor says, "We have wasted scientific and
technical resources and damaged our professional credibility by collaborating
with madness rather than trying to study, cure and ultimately prevent
it."
From about 1975 into the 2000s, Johns Hopkins came to see the waste
of scientific and technical resources and no longer would perform sex-change
surgeries.
Nor would they direct resources toward preparing men, mostly,
but some women as well, for the insurmountable challenges of becoming a faux man
or faux woman.
John Hopkins---Dr. McHugh and his esteemed colleagues
decided to no longer "collaborate with madness" but rather seek ways to help
these very needy, broken individuals.
He says, "After the early major
research was concluded, we at Johns Hopkins Psychiatry Department eventually
concluded that human sexual identity is mostly built into our constitution by
the genes we inherit and the embryogenesis we undergo."
McHugh
says, "We psychiatrists would do better to concentrate on trying to fix their
minds and not their genitalia."
The
doctor says the transgender activists, now affiliated with the gay liberation
movements, still argue that their members are entitled to whatever surgery they
want, and their sexual dysphoria represents a true conception of their sexual
identity."
He says, "One might expect that those who claim that sexual
identity has no biological or physical basis would bring forth more evidence to
persuade others. But as I've learned, there is a deep prejudice in favor of the
idea that nature is highly malleable."
He says, "Dr. Victor Frankenstein
thought that way. We know how that story ended."
Dr. McHugh is a major
problem to homosexual activists on a number of fronts. He is regularly attacked
by those activists, but McHugh has an audience because of his
credentials.
McHugh is not, by his own testimony, an evangelical or
activist, nor can he really be considered "right wing."
He told the New York
Times back in 2002 that he is a "Catholic, a Democrat, politically
liberal and culturally conservative---a believer in marriage and Marines, a
supporter of institutions and family values."
The Wall
Street Journal wrote a story based on his book which was published in
2006, back in 2012, then updated it and republished it again in 2014.
His
work is now being widely circulated among conservative activist groups, some
churches, and a growing number of college campuses---but not in the
classroom.
McHugh's work and that of his colleagues not only undermines
the current rush to insanity in the name of enlightenment and compassion by
President Obama and the Progressive Left intent on remaking the country, but
raises the question of why are we not providing real help for those who are
gender confused.
There is help. Scientifically and
spiritually.
Our
prejudices are so great that we would rather "collaborate with madness" in the
name of political correctness than offer legitimate help to those who are gender
confused.
That in
itself is its own kind of prejudice and bigotry, placing the "movement" over the
individual.
Indeed,
we do know the story of Dr. Victor
Frankenstein. Dr. McHugh is right. Dr. Frankenstein did not end
well.
As a boy, his interest in discovering the long-sought "elixir of
life" led him into chemistry where he becomes obsessed with the idea of creating
life in inanimate matter through artificial means.
Young Frankenstein
creates a humanoid creature, that eventually begs him to create a female
companion for him; Frankenstein agrees, but then realizes he has created a race
of monsters, refuses and decides to destroy his creation.
Enraged, the
creature swears revenge; he kills Frankenstein's best friend and promises
Frankenstein "You have denied me my wedding night---I will be with you on
yours."
On Frankenstein's wedding night, the "creature" appears and
strangles Frankenstein's wife.
Frankenstein, wracked with guilt and
despair, pursues his friend or "demon" as he calls him, for the rest of his
life. In his pursuit, Frankenstein himself loses his life.
When the
created shakes their fist in the face of the Creator, it never ends
well.
It is written: "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its
end is the way of death" (Pr. 14:12).
It is also recorded in Luke
4:17-20.
"And
He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He
found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to
heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of
sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the
acceptable year of the Lord."
Then
He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes
of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
Then Jesus told the
people: "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
Personal
healing through the work and ministry of the Great Physician.
Be
Whole. Be Blessed.
