California Forces LGBT Family Lessons on Second Graders

News Staff : Jul 22, 2016 : CBN News

Beginning in second grade, students will learn about different family structures. That includes families with LGBT parents.

(Sacramento, CA) — [CBN News] The California State Board of Education voted unanimously to include a comprehensive study of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history in public schools, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The curriculum will be taught to elementary, middle, and high-school students in history and social-science classes.

National Review reported that beginning in second grade, students will learn about different family structures. That includes families with LGBT parents.

The framework states the goal is to help students "locate themselves and their own families in history and learn about the lives and historical struggles of their peers."

In fourth grade, students will learn about the history of LGBT people in California and the country's first gay rights organizations in the 1950s.

Fourth graders will also be taught about Harvey Milk, "a New Yorker who was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977 as California's first openly gay public official," National Review reports. The study of Milk is incorporated into learning about immigrants who come to California.

Under the new curriculum, the role of gender in history will be taught to eighth grade students, including a study on how the Western frontier made way for substantial changes in gender norms.

In high school, students will learn about the first time a sex-reassignment surgery was performed, homosexuals in the military, "LGBT-oriented subcultures," and "the pioneering role of gay politicians," National Review reports.

In addition, as part of the LGBT curriculum, high school students will learn about the Supreme Court decision that overturned sodomy laws.
