British Isles: visions, prayers & doughnuts 24/7

In a recent 24/7 update from the University of Liverpool, they reported, EVERY DAY THERE WERE PEOPLE SAYING, ‘I WISH MY HOUR HADN’T GONE BY SO FAST!’ The organisers said, ‘We wanted to create a space where people could be themselves and meet with a God who meets them where they are. So, over our Spring semester we ran a Prayer Room. We invited students from across the city to come as they were. Shaking off our preconceptions of prayer, we encouraged everyone to paint, draw, sing, dance, laugh or cry - whatever helped them to connect with their Creator. Many discovered that prayer is more than they ever thought; it helped them to discover new ways to pray. Students prayed on their own and in groups, for their campuses, the city and the world. Over three days a blank wall of paper was filled with visions of love, pouring out through the city of Liverpool - the city which birthed the phrase, ‘All you need is love’.

Praise:

God for the student and adult teams praying 24/7 across our nation - the hidden army of God. (Ps.32:7b,8b)

South Korea: UPRISING UPDATE

Following the World Prayer Assembly held in Jakarta in 2012, the leaders of the International Prayer Council felt that a NEW WAVE of prayer and missions movements is coming and is now here - for the youth, by the youth - hence the inception of gathering this generation for a World Youth Prayer Assembly, called UPRISING (United Prayer Rising). This week ordinary people from every nation have been extraordinarily impacting our world. (Acts 17:6) They gathered because they believe their prayers matter and are willing to fight and make a sacrifice together, seeking the face of God to bring justice and peace among the nations. (1 Peter 4: 7-8, Joel 2:15, Joel 3:9-10, Psalm 24:6, Isaiah 2:2-4). Old and young are honouring each other to bring healing between generations and are praying to set a standard for their own generation. (Malachi 4:5-6,) See also

Praise:

God for this massive gathering and mobilisation of people from all over the world, fasting and praying, amplifying the sound of Hope and Renewal of a Jesus movement that is coming. (Jn. 17:21)

Join thousands of other Christians to pray for our nation

Following the European Union referendum result and the uncertainty and division that has followed, Premier Christian Radio feel it is crucial that Christians intercede in prayer at this time. They have put out a call to prayer for our nation, saying, ‘Together we'll be praying every day at midday for 5 days from 1 August. Taking part could not be simpler. All you have to do is text PRAY to 70700 and you will get sent the prayers by text message. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing you will be able to join this wave of prayer which will also be reflected on Premier Christian Radio and Premier Praise.’

Pray:

for many to stand together to pray for the peace and prosperity of this land; may many experience the power of praying together at such a time as this. (Lev.26:6)

Trafficking a hidden UK crime

Modern slavery and human trafficking is increasing in the UK. Demand for cheap goods, cheap labour and cheap sex has driven a steep increase in the number of victims reported to authorities. 3,266 people were identified as victims of modern slavery and efforts to eradicate it are failing, with potential number of victims being trafficked into Britain rising by 245% over the last five years, according to official figures. Ministers believe these figures suggest that more victims were willing to come forward for help while others are urging the police to step up their efforts, arguing that the statistics confirmed that trafficking and slavery are thriving in the UK. Andrew Wallis, founder and chief executive of the anti-slavery charity Unseen, said that although the UK Government passed the Modern Slavery Act in 2014, more needs to be done. Jakub Sobik, of Anti-Slavery International agreed. Pray for even more awareness by the public of this hidden crime. See also

Pray:

for the vulnerable and the victims of violence and abuse to receive appropriate support. (1Pt.5:7)

Holiday hunger: Parents skip meals to feed children

The Trussell Trust charity reported, ‘Some parents will skip a meal to feed their children this summer.’ There is an increased demand for their 35 food banks during July and August, when there is no access to school dinners or breakfast clubs. In response the Trussell Trust has launched new holiday clubs to offer children activities and provide them with meals. Families who rely on free school meals during term time can find themselves facing hunger in the school holidays. No one knows the full scale of hunger but these figures make one thing clear: many families are closer to crisis than we think. Trussell Trust is just one of the many charities, churches and clubs delivering lunches and activities to families in poverty across the United Kingdom. Pray for the organisers to have enough volunteers to run the clubs/activities. Pray for more people to recognise the need and donate their money/food to these resources. Pray for good communication between referral agencies and churches/charities.

Pray:

for the families unable to pay for childcare and food during the six-week break, embarrassed to seek help, or not knowing there is help available. (Ps.142:4,5)

Northern Ireland: Arson attack on church

A Presbyterian church was targeted in an arson attack in south Belfast, in the early hours of Sunday morning causing a significant amount of damage. Police said, ‘a sectarian motive is one of a number of lines of enquiry’. A Sinn Féin spokesman said: ‘I condemn this attack, - the second attack on a church in South Belfast in recent months. As with the previous violence the people behind it are targeting a hub of community endeavour and a place of worship and peace building.’ He added , ‘My thoughts are with the congregation of Saintfield Road Presbyterian Church. I have been in contact with them and I know they will not be deflected from their good work by this senseless act.’ Pray for an end to the continued guerrilla war activities rooted in the historic ‘Troubles’ conflict that began in the 1960’s

Pray:

for renewed attitudes that will end political, religious, cultural and racial conflict. (Ps.133:1)

British security - attack on UK is ‘very likely’

A terrorist attack in the UK is ‘highly likely’ following attacks in other parts of Europe, a five-judge tribunal has been told, as churches in Britain are told to tighten security. The heightened state of security comes as images threatening attacks in London and other major world capitals were reportedly posted on jihadi messaging app Telegram. Despite there being no specific intelligence relating to attacks against the Christian community in the UK, the National Police Chiefs' Council is urging the community to be alert but not alarmed. They are reiterating protective security advice to Christian places of worship and have circulated specific advice reminding Churches to review their security arrangements as a precaution, stating: ‘While the threat from terrorism remains unchanged at severe, (which means that an attack is highly likely) we urge the public to be vigilant.’

Pray:

for peace which passes all understanding, for Government, police, and security services to have supernatural wisdom to thwart every plan of the enemy wanting fear and destruction. (Lk.10:19)

Places of worship to have more security

Churches, mosques, synagogues and all places of worship will receive government-funded ‘protective security measures’ to keep them safe after a rise in hate crimes. £2.4 million will protect places of worship across the country. The steps will be outlined in the Government's hate crime action plan to be published next week. It includes calls for prosecutors to give tougher sentences for perpetrators of hate crimes. The action plan sets out steps to boost reporting of offences and support victims, with guidance on racially and religiously aggravated offences. There will be a continued emphasis on eradicating anti-Semitism. Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, said ‘We are Great Britain because we are united by values like democracy, free speech, mutual respect and opportunity for all.

Pray:

for Amber Rudd and her team working towards supporting victims and eradicating hate crimes.(Ja.1:5a)

Trumpet Call 2016 - early alert

Trumpet Call 2016 will be held in the International Convention Centre, Birmingham, on 15 October the theme of Jubilee. The term Jubilee in the Old Testament was given to the last year of a 50-year period which God instituted for the Nation of Israel to maintain the spiritual, economic and social cohesion of the nation. The principles of Jubilee are the foundation stones of the Christian faith today, namely redemption, reconciliation, freedom, mercy and forgiveness, restoration and unity, and are as important now as they were in Bible times. We are in a period of social, political and economic change, a time of mercy and of shaking. Many believe it’s a watershed moment for our nations and Europe. The referendum has exposed deep fractures in our society. We need to pray for God to fulfil His purposes for our nations at this time. Have you booked your tickets for the 15 October? If not, go to the World Prayer Centre website, on the ‘More’ link below.

Pray:

for thousands from Churches, Christian Agencies and Prayer Ministries to stand and pray on the 15/10/16; for the nation to rise and claim our Christian heritage.

Germany: Pegida

Germany's anti-Islamic, anti-immigrant Pegida movement wants to found a political party. The new group would be called the Popular Party for Freedom and Direct Democracy (FDDV), according to its head Lutz Bachmann. Bachmann was fined recently for inciting racial hatred. The move to form a party comes with authorities considering a ban for the original association which spawned Pegida over fears of growing extremism. Bachmann insists that the new party would not seek to overshadow the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a Eurosceptic party railing against Islam and Germany's openness to refugees. He said that relations between the two far-right movements were good and ‘only together’ could they serve their mutual cause. Meanwhile police are clamping down on nationwide racial hate speeches.

Pray:

for God to intervene in political parties jostling for positions ahead of 2017 elections. (Lk.22:26)

Ireland: Christians, Muslims and atheists unite for alternative religious education

In an unexpected coalition, the Evangelical Alliance of Ireland (EAI) has joined with Atheist Ireland and Irish Ahmadiyya Muslims to work for alternatives to religious education in schools. They are hoping to do away with state-sponsored religious education courses required for students. They believe that requirement harms religion and state, even though 85% of Irish people identify as Catholics. The EAI stated that in opposing the course it seeks to ‘protect children from coercion and discrimination in the area of religious education.’ Atheist Ireland stated, ‘The minister for education should immediately inform all schools at second level that the state religious education is not compulsory. Imam Noonan stressed the importance of not allowing one particular faith to ‘have the monopoly in schools.’

Pray:

for Ireland to recognise and stand by their Christian Catholic heritage in education. (Ps. 78:5)

Rio: Terrorists plan attacking Olympic athletes

Authorities in Brazil are on high alert as Al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamic terrorists were instructed on social media to carry out ‘lone wolf’ attacks against Israeli, American, British and French athletes in Rio. ‘One small knife attack against Americans/Israelis in these places will have bigger media effect than attacks anywhere else,' they said. ‘Your chance to take part in the global Jihad is here! Your chance to be a martyr is here!’ The murder-inciting message points to the easy process of obtaining travel visas to Brazil and a wide availability of guns in ‘crime-ridden slums.’ Israelis are the biggest targets. ‘From amongst the worst enemies, the most famous is Israelis, Muslims all agree. Spectators are also legitimate targets, but priority should be given to attacking prominent leaders.’

Pray:

against plans of food poisoning, planting explosives, pouring lubricating oil on highways with sharp curves, and kidnapping Israelis and Americans in order to free Muslim prisoners. (Job 5:12)

Global Church leaders condemn killing of French priest

As the French president met Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist leaders after Father Jacques Hamel was murdered while conducting morning mass in his church, Vatican spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi said the Pope was being kept up-to-date with developments and that he felt pain and horror at the ‘absurd violence’. After meeting the religious representatives, President Francois Hollande held a security and defence council and appealed for ‘unity’, warning that the war against terrorism will be long. Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, tweeted, ‘Evil attacks the weakest, denies truth & love, and is defeated through Jesus Christ. Pray for France, for victims, for their communities.’ The BBC reported a Nun who escaped from the scene saying, ‘They forced him to his knees. And that's when the tragedy happened. They recorded themselves giving a sort of sermon around the altar, in Arabic. It's a horror,’ she told BFM television’. See also

Pray:

for God to bind the spiritual forces making war against democracy and religion. (Mt.18:18)

Afghanistan: Child deaths push war casualties to record high

The UN reported that civilian casualties in Afghanistan reached a record high in the first half of 2016, (1,601 civilians killed and 3,565 wounded) with children paying a heavy price as insurgent groups stepped up the fighting. The report came two days after the deadliest attack in Kabul since 2001. The Taliban has stepped up their insurgency and IS seeks to expand its foothold in east Afghanistan. Every event documented in this report revealed people killed while praying, working, studying, fetching water, recovering in hospitals, and every civilian casualty represents a failure of commitment and should be a call to action for parties to the conflict to take meaningful steps to reduce civilians’ suffering. History and the collective memory of the Afghan people will judge leaders of all parties to this conflict by their conduct.

Pray:

for God’s mercy on families without breadwinners, orphans, those without limbs and those living in fear. Ask God to send righteous people and provisions to justice-starved Afghans. (Ex. 33:19)

Turkey: Detainees 'beaten, tortured and raped' after failed coup

Amnesty International has credible evidence of Turkish detainees subjected to beatings, torture and rape since the failed coup. ‘It is absolutely imperative that the Turkish authorities halt these abhorrent practices and allow international monitors to visit all these detainees in the places they are being held’, said Amnesty Europe. Erdogan extended the maximum period of detention from 4 to 30 days, increasing risks of torture and maltreatment. Pray for Erdogan to be cautious as he signs laws without prior parliamentary approval in his drive to remove supporters of the coup. Pray for an end to indiscriminate crackdowns on ‘opposition’. Pray for justice for the 60,000+ detained or suspended: soldiers, police, judges, teachers, civil servants and others.

Pray:

for the Government to recognise any mistakes they have made and to consider the rights of those who did not vote for them and for all sides in this situation to come together. (2Sa.24:14)

Global: Poverty and development

The failure of much of the world to meet the first Millennium Development Goals of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger by 2015 highlights the need for research to go beyond the measuring of poverty and give more attention to its causes and dynamics. The department of History and Ethnology at Jyväskylä University, Finland are inviting anthropologists, ethnologists, sociologists, socio-economists, political scientists and development researchers to submit paper proposals at a conference on urban poverty on August 4-6, 2016. This three-day conference will explore new findings and developing theories on the causes of poverty, especially urban poverty or poverty at the interface between the urban and rural. Possible themes will be climate change, water and sanitation, economy, governance, health, religion and technology.

Pray:

for the outcome to be recognised and used to reduce poverty, corruption and empty promises. (Ps. 31:9)

USA: Black lives matter

Video footage has emerged of a policeman violently throwing an African-American female school teacher to the ground, and a second officer telling her, ‘whites are afraid of black people because they have violent tendencies and are ‘intimidating.’ Austin police officer Richter pulled over Breaion King for speeding. He told her to close the door. She refused, saying, ‘Would you please hurry up?’ He lost his temper and dragged her out of the car. She shouted, ‘No! Why are you touching me? Oh my God!’ He shouted, ‘Stop resisting!’ and violently threw her to the ground, ordered her to put her hands behind her back, saying, ‘I'm about to taser you.’ When she managed to stand up, he body-slammed her to the ground again. The video came as demonstrations continue across the US by 'Black Lives Matter' campaigners.

Pray:

that current exposures of true police treatment of African Americans will cause changes. (Ex. 20:16)

USA/Israel: Pro-Israel evangelicals ‘will storm US voting booths’

Thousands of potential voters stood with open arms waving American and Israeli flags and vowing that for Zion’s sake their voices would be heard. The Christians United for Israel (CUFI) group’s annual summit was booked years in advance of the announcement that the Republican Party would hold its nominating convention in the same place during the same week. The grassroots-based organisation sees itself as playing a central role in the 2016 election drama. CUFI spoke out in advance of the Republican convention when the platform committee drafted party doctrine for the coming election. Their lobbying organisation had the word ‘divided’ changed to ‘undivided’ on the Republican platform with regards to Jerusalem. ‘We want to see Jerusalem the eternal capital of the Jewish people undivided today, tomorrow and forever.’ said CUFI. In US politics there is strength in numbers and CUFI’s strength and mobilisation was noticed.

Pray:

for God to be in the detail of all plans and policies of US political parties. (Ps.92:12)
