Advent
means coming. The first coming of Jesus is celebrated beginning the
fourth Sunday before Christmas. Four candles are typically used,
symbolizing Hope, Love, Joy and Peace. The first candle is lit on the
first Sunday. Each following Sunday a another successive candle is lit with it. The spiritual focus of worship and preaching follows the same progression. Thus, we pause and reflect on God’s part and our part.
Since
most of my upbringing was on Scripture from the King James version, I’m
going to stick with it here. Somehow, it brings back fond memories of times with family in daily devotions and the sense of community we shared with Christian friends as we congregated together. Advent, Christmas and Easter gatherings before the Lord especially brought joy to my heart. May these verses from God’s Word bless you.
Advent Hope
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Heb 11:1
And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Ro 5:5
We
give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our
prayers; Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of
love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God
and our Father; Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God. 1 Thes 1:2-4
But
let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of
faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath
not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus
Christ, 1 Thes 5:8-9
Advent love
Blessed
be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his
abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance
incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in
heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto
salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Wherein ye greatly
rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness
through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much
more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire,
might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of
Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see
him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of
glory: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your
souls. 1 Peter 1:3-9
For
we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived,
serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful,
and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our
Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have
done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of
regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us
abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his
grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm
constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to
maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. Titus 3:3-8
Whosoever
shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he
in God. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us.
God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in
him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the
day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no
fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath
torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him,
because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his
brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath
seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment
have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. 1 Jn 4:15-21
Advent joy
And
there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping
watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came
upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they
were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I
bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For
unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is
Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the
babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there
was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and
saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will
toward men. Lk 2:8-14
Now
the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye
may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Ro 15:13
Advent peace
But
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness,
goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections
and lusts. Gal 5:22-24
Finally,
brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind,
live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. Greet
one another with an holy kiss. All the saints salute you.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. 2 Cor 13:11-14 Advent
