The church that met in the city of Pergamos as recorded in the Bible was called the “deceived” church. It was a well known city that exuded culture and higher learning. Likewise, Pergamos was where parchment to write was first used. The problem with Pergamos is that it engaged in emperor worship. In other words, much of the populace had the propensity to worship secular leadership models and systems. The same holds true today within  institutional systems that are religious in nature rather than kingdom minded or Spirit led.

The church in Pergamos was persecuted and Jesus even made reference to Antipas who was martyred as one of its residents. The Pergamos church did not deny their faith in Jesus and this is commendable… However, the Bible states that this church was nonetheless deceived! Once again, the same holds true for many today who are bound in static religion rather than kingdom living. The difference between static religion and kingdom living is stark. Religion will always react to societal events or the environment in the same way that a “thermometer” responds to the environment. Those who walk in the kingdom life are not reactive but proactive in the same way that a thermostat “sets”or creates the environment.

These folks were not blasphemers and truly believed in Jesus as the Son of God and their Savior. The issue at hand was that the Pergamos “type” church was and still is deceived by the doctrine and spirit of Balaam! Deception is easily explained in that it offers a false sense of security without understanding or hearing the voice of the Lord (Spirit-Led) The same holds true as many people believe in Christ as savior, but refuse to believe in the supernatural dynamics of the Holy Spirit! Deep deception has clouded many from experiencing the kingdom of God due to their genuine unbelief in the supernatural. The Kingdom of God on earth is natural in its humanity…But it is also supernatural or heavenly in its origin and must be “recognized” if it is to truly impact us in experiencing the abundant life.

Deception in the church today has manifested through the spirit or doctrines of Balaam and the Nicolaitans as it did in the Pergamos church. The doctrine of Balaam is falsely “prophetic” in its roots and refers to Balaam who was actually a prophet of God to the people of Israel. Israel at this time was coming out Egypt (Salvation) at least a million strong and moving toward Moab. The Moabite king did not want to engage the Israelites in battle due to what he had heard in regard to all that God was doing on their behalf. So, the king of Moab hired a prophet to bring a curse upon them and essentially undermine the Lord’s best for His people. I am sure that you can see the analogy and how it applies to the situation of false prophetic declarations and fear mongering today. Many of  these “prophesies” are  and will continue to be nothing but curses in disguise which detours our focus and mandate to build the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.

The king offered Balaam a bunch of money. Although Balaam knew in his heart that he did not possess God’s anointing in proclaiming the kings wishes…He desired the money and earthly reward the Moabite king offered! Using the gifts of God for personal reward rather than being led by the Spirit is the deception and doctrine of Balaam. The Lord will never rescind on a spiritual gift. However, He will take away the opportunities to use spiritual gifts if abused for selfish gain and even self-affirmation.

The Nicolaitan doctrine elevates religious leaders to cult-like status. The spirit behind this doctrine deceives people into reliance upon so-called religious leaders for their spiritual validation and worth rather than Christ. The Nicolaitan doctrine does not adhere to equality among the saints and to submit to one another in the fear of the Lord. Rather, a chasm or divide is spiritually erected and manifests as the clergy – laity system.  This is in direction opposition to the words of Christ in that we all bondservants and equal in out spiritual value in building the kingdom of God. 2010 will be a time of cleansing the church of man and ministry worship that has deceived many. Paul states very clearly that we are equal in Christ (i.e. male or female and free or slave) It is important that we understand that some may be more “visible” than others…But they are not more “significant!”

The Nicolaitans deceived people into looking unto man rather than God for their spiritual value and worth. The Bible states that we are to be looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. It is critical in this hour that we recognize the Spirit at work in a man and not the man him or herself. Man will always disappoint - confusing or interlocking the two will always promote deception and frustration. Why is there such frustration today? Because far too many “believers” have decided to look unto man-soaked religion instead of the leading of Holy Spirit.

Interesting.. how does the part on fornication fit into this? Is Jesus talking mainly spiritual fornication? I do know that what manifests in the spiritual does make manifest in the natural, as well...
