THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA

Our nation, the United States of American, stands at a crossroads. We are still recognized as the primary leader amongst the nations of the earth. While there is a deep resentment in some regions towards the USA, most recognize that as our nation goes economically, so goes the world. There also, I believe, is a deeper mostly unspoken recognition that as our nation goes morally, so goes the world. The anger that is often expressed at America in other countries has a deep seated cause that many fail to recognize. We have portrayed ourselves as “a city set on a hill,” as an example of freedom, justice and democracy and in many cases we have been just that. However, the hostility expressed towards us by people of other nations is not because we have held up those ideas, it is because too often we have not lived up to them.

There is a reason we have fallen so short of the goals we have set for ourselves. The founding fathers set up a system rooted and grounded in a society governed by Christian principles. More specifically, the political move that gave birth to this country, as many scholars have pointed out, was born in the spiritual awakening that preceded it.

This nation was birthed in revival. It’s prosperity, and more ominously, it’s survival depends on revival. A living, vital and genuine Church is the spiritual and moral engine that runs the United States of America. Every generation of Americans, from the start, has witnessed a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit that reconnects a remnant with the source from which we came. Though often unrecognized by the secular culture, these waves of revival have sustained us and moved us forward as a people.

America is divided now, not as much by politics as lifestyle. Many in our culture have reached the point described by the Bible as “calling evil good and good evil.” Moral people throughout the world despairingly recognize that the nation that once led the world in the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ now leads the world in degradation of every sort. Corruption, injustice, greed, licentiousness and lust are now major exports. Our light has become darkness. We need revival. The world needs a revival in America. We need Jesus.
