Hawaii: Prisoners choose to live for God

Roy Yamamoto’s criminal activities ran the gamut: assault, kidnapping, extortion, attempted murder, and second-degree robbery. He was facing a conviction that carried a sentence of 80 years to life. But after his Christian cellmate invited him to the prison’s Bible study, he decided to change his life around and live for God. After that, through an amazing series of legal proceedings, a Christian judge saw potential in Roy and dropped the charge against him; he was released from prison in 1996.

These days, Roy has made his way back to prison, though for a completely different reason: he shares the love of Jesus with prisoners and shows them the freedom that He found in Christ. His church, New Hope Christian Fellowship Church of Oahu, Hawaii, developed an incredible prison ministry. Most of the people in the ministry were also once convicted of crimes and are now living and evangelizing for Jesus Christ. In the outreaches, thousands of prisoner lives have been changed.
