The Path to Rest in the Kingdom

By Ron McGatlin
A troubled world seeks rest, but most people do not find it. Many troubled Christians also continue unsuccessfully to seek a place of rest in this life. A myriad of factors may be involved in the lack of rest. However, it appears that one troubling base concern is foundational to many, if not all unrest in believers. We can dig deeper and trace the path backward to its source. In other words we can uncover and recognize the path of unrest and perhaps also discover the path that leads to rest in the Kingdom of God.
The Pathology of Unrest in the Kingdom
Probably most people, if asked about what troubles them, would express some form of a sense of lack or need within their life or the world around them that they are unable to control or fix. This lack of control, or the power to fix, leads to fear concerning the potential results of the situation. The fear of lack or need may take different forms such as worry, anxiety, phobias of many sorts, jealousy, coveting, greed, inferiority, and many others.
On the flip side of fear is pride and other related heart attitudes such as arrogance and haughtiness. The flip side of fear (pride) shows up when through human strength and cunning a person is able to successfully fulfill some or all of their recognized needs. Pride is the same thing as fear only expressed differently, and both stem from lack of faith in God. The path of unrest leads backward first to fear / pride. Fear comes from a lack of faith in God, or said another way, unbelief toward God.
What is below the unbelief in God? From where does the lack of faith come? The next step backward in the path is not hearing God.
Rom 10:17: So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Unbelief or lack of faith comes from not hearing God and originates in the lack of intimate experience with God in the Spirit. Not experiencing God’s love and power is the path to lack of real faith. One may have knowledge of the written word of God and build a pseudo-belief system upon that knowledge and call it faith. However, true faith will not be formed without the practical real experience of intimate relationship with Spirit God.
To look at the next step backward down this path we must ask, what is the cause of the lack of experiencing intimate relationship and interaction with God?
You may not like this next part and want to debate it, but please give this time for the Holy Spirit to confirm or deny. There is only one basic cause of our being separated from the experience of intimate fellowship and relationship with God in the Spirit. In a word we are separated from the intimate presence of God by our disobedience.
Isa 59:2: But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.
God’s love is unconditional.
God’s love does not fail yet His holy intimate presence cannot partake of our sin of disobedience. Our disrespect for His love and provision is indeed painful in His heart and causes a great loss to us. The kingdom of God – New Jerusalem lifestyle potential - is at risk when we willfully turn from His guidance by His Spirit.
God’s provision is fully adequate to reconcile us from the penalty and cleanse us from the practice of sin. Our part is to be fully willing to receive His provision of reconciliation through the cross and the cleansing of the practice of sin by the resurrected life of Christ abiding within us by His Spirit.
Rom 5:10:  For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
The penalty for all our sin was fully paid for at the cross. The practice of sin is being cleansed by His life. Jesus is alive and abides in His people who abide in Him. His life is holy and without sin. We are being saved from the practice of sin by the indwelling life of Christ. Those who are of Christ cannot practice sin. We are not separated from God as a penalty to sin but by our not abiding in Christ in the Spirit. We could be counting on going to heaven when we die but be missing the kingdom of heaven life with its rest now in this life.
1 John 3:9: Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
1 John 3:5-7: And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.
Jesus on the Cross paid the penalty for our sin, but that by itself does not take away our sinning in this life. His manifestation in us by His Spirit takes away our sin. Jesus in us causes us to stop sinning, thus taking away sin.
We may have received the work of the cross paying the penalty for sin but may have not yet received the further work of the resurrection life of Christ producing His life in our bodies. This separates us from intimate fellowship with God, which causes us to not be able to hear, which limits our faith, which causes fear, which causes unrest in the sense of lack of power and provision.
When Adam disobeyed God there was no Bible, no ten commandments, and no religious structures. It was not the Bible word or the church word that He heard and disobeyed. Adam walked with God in intimate fellowship and knew God’s desire and spoken word for himself and for Eve as well. Yet Adam chose to exercise his free will and disobey God’s spoken word. Adam lost his close fellowship with God. He not only lost intimate fellowship with God, but he also lost the blessings and benefits of fellowship. He lost the kingdom of God lifestyle.
God did not stop loving Adam and Eve. However, the close intimate fellowship and the blessings of life in the prepared Garden of Eden was lost, and Adam’s life became dependent upon his own strength separated from intimate fellowship and special benefits of his previous relationship with God.
Adam made a personal decision that cost him and all who came from him to lose intimate fellowship with God. All mankind has another personal decision involving obedience to God. That decision is to walk in what God has provided to restore us to intimate fellowship with Him. Deciding not to walk in the promise of the Father for our redemption and our cleansing is disobedience to His desire, which is clearly expressed in His spoken and written word. Our disobedience prevents our intimate walk with God and causes our loss of power and provision needed to overcome fear and remain in His rest.
God’s love for us does not change with our disobedience. However, our intimate fellowship with Him is broken. The blessings and benefits of that intimate communion are lost. We return to being powerless people unable to bring God’s authority to bear on situations in our life and in the world around us. We know things need to be better. We know things need to be in God’s order, and we suffer frustration or unrest because things are not in order, and we lack the power to control or fix them. Therefore, we are missing the kingdom of God lifestyle.
The Father’s Promised Provision
Jesus spoke of the promise of His Father after He was risen from the dead and before His ascension to the Father.
Luke 24:49 "Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."
Acts 1:4-5: And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."
Immediately prior to His ascension, He spoke of them receiving power when the Holy Spirit came upon them.
Acts 1:8: "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
Gal 3:13-14: Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Many believers are not at rest, because they have stopped at the cross and failed to move on to the resurrection and receive the resurrected Spirit of Christ in the Holy Spirit. The provision of the promise of the Father, the Holy Spirit, is the source of love, power, and wisdom to overcome sin and every work of the enemy. It is the power and love of Christ in us to establish the reign of the kingdom of heaven in our lives and in the world around us.
His power and love produces righteousness in us. Righteousness produces peace and joy. Rest in the kingdom of God is love, righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Keep on pursuing love. It never fails
and His kingdom never ends.

Amen!  Thank you Ron.

I have been challenged with this question at certain times over the last couple of weeks:  Will I choose to walk in step with the Spirit (through faith in Christ living in me) in this moment (tending to be in the heat of pressing situations), or just resign myself to walking according to the sinful nature?

It is indeed, as you say, a matter of obedience.

There are two major works of Jesus through the cross. First the death of the cross and then the resurrection life after the cross. Each are a necessary part of the establishment of the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. The full work is only available as we personally relate to Christ through the Holy Spirit. If there is lack of the evidence of the kingdom now there is lack of relationship now.
What is the cause of the lack of experiencing intimate relationship and interaction with God?

Bro. Ron...

The following word can be tested ... and within its own structure manifesting  a rest in, for, and among us given to seek the Kingdom of God..and the Righteous Way of Gatering... = A Tarrying in love Thing!

To rest is to write of rest ...and although this seems very hard for some to understand , it being far from their character... thinking to do , run, and work the presence of the church is to bring rest.

Your shared :

It is the power and love of Christ in us to establish the reign of the kingdom of heaven in our lives and in the world around us.

That powereis only manfeated in love and that love whne manifested a matter of patiences. Patiences to "Tarry".

Folks in love , so as to realte to one another do this and if one is given to rest in the Spirit ...  can do this , as it is a matter of Abideing in the Character of Our Lord... Himself.

This act and or way of righteous honoring the Way of God , in that all are given to take time with one another ( a one on one thing) ... establishes something much deeper that what is going on in the minds of those gathered , and that is it is foundational for "slowing down" of the mind.

Now slowed down they can begin to recieve one another ( tarrying) to hear what all the Holy Spirit might have to share to:

To agree about or establish to ...
    • settle
    • arrange
    • arrive at
    • conclude
    • come to
    • decide upon
    • fix
    • negotiate
    • see eye to eye
    • assent to
    • reach

Within all gathered ... to aide in what is needed "without"  here on earth to have thier lives be seen as being blessed inthe Love of Our Lord..

Power from on high to do chruch or power from on high to help and love the neighbor across the street ...and in doing so manifest that same patience to tarry with hin or here to help them find the WAY of REST...

It is interesting , but I just saw a Christian minister on TV who lost part of all his saving = his rest and could not  give any.. reasonable explanation of how he could understand he coudl be robbed of all his savings..

Could it be that the act of tarrying is a manifestation of God Character, that enables one to recieve that wisdom from Heaven manifested when applied in our everyday lives ( lifestyle) that is the power of God, as opposed to some endtime sign  Gentiles look for?

uke 24:49 "Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."

I hear the character of an experienced elder in this this verse...

1 Tim. 3:15 (KJV)
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

It does stand to reason that the in-ability for folks to stand inthe House of God ... is a matter of behaving in that same character pf Christ ... in that His way was a matter founedational = piller& ground to tarry upon because waht was being done was a matter and manner of TRUTH..

Rest dear Brother REST...

Good word Larry, Thanks for the input. This line summed it up pretty well. Larry wrote:

Yes it could.

Rest in the Kingdom is by Living and Walking in the Spirit.

Rom 8:1-4:  There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

The provision of God is being IN CHRIST JESUS and WALKING according to the SPIRIT. The work of the cross is carried out in the resurrected life of Christ in us as we live and walk in the SPIRIT that is HOLY – the SPIRIT of God – the God who is SPIRIT and who is HOLY – the HOLY SPIRIT – the One Who raised Christ Jesus from the dead.

Rom 8:11-15:  But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells (means to occupy) in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells (means to inhabit) in you.

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors; not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father."

Gal 5:16:  I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Gal 5:19-21:  Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Gal 5:22-25:  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Gal 6:7-8:  Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

There is only one act of disobedience that is not covered by the work of the cross.

A biblical word for disobedience to God is sin. There is only one sin that is not redeemable through the finished work of Christ at the Cross. This act prevents the appropriation or personal application of the provisions of God and therefore is beyond the reach of the work of Christ in an individual. This is the willfully denial of the Holy Spirit. This act against the Spirit is an act of the free will of man to choose.

The Spirit of God draws men to redemption and delivers the grace to empower holiness. The continuing rejecting of the appropriation of Christ Jesus by the Holy Spirit is called blasphemy in the bible. To blaspheme the SPIRIT is to reject the resurrected life of Christ. This vilifies the Spirit of God and denotes the Spirit as not really God but a lower class delivery person of what is considered the far more valuable Father and Son.

Mark 3:28-29:  "Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation"

This is a theological error of dividing God two severely. We truly have one God in three manifestations. In the fire of the heart of God they are one. If we do not respect the Holy Spirit as God we will not live and walk in the Spirit. The Spirit of Christ only lives in us by the Holy Spirit of God. Therefore if we do not receive the provision of God through His Holy Spirit, the life and works of Christ that reconciles us by His death and saves us by His resurrection life is not in us. The cross pays for our sin which reconciles us to God and the life of Christ within saves us from sinning and causes us to live as Christ is in the world.

I just read this post again, and Ron touched on something that I totally forgot about, but so important, fear, worry, anxiety stems from pride, when we feel powerless, unable to change circumstances or even ourselves, yet try to deal and react by the arm of the flesh (fear) we arent abiding in him, then we experience unrest...I see pride is the root of this (and God knows Ive struggled in this area) especially more recently Ive had some stuff happen that triggered fear and yes feel powerless and yes have reacted from fear and emotions...so seeing the root of it "pride" I repent...this thread helped me see the root of my problem, I do believe and needed to hear again the power of the Holy Spirit...This is the new covenant promise and the fullness of God in 3 persons...we choose to yield and abide in Him, Ive tasted and experienced the rest in God, yet I also know the unrest, and how many times when I feel troubled in my Spirit, I say its this that and the other thing! but its not that its me! so today my focus is on God changing me deep on the inside, and me seeing I have a problem only He can fix...through confession I rest now trusting God to do for me what I cant do for myself (apart from Him) I have a hunger again for more of Him and less of Me!

To Bro. Ron and Susan .. I can also Say a big Yes... as Lyn posted!

Speaking of a Path of Rest, the following scripture Bro. Ron shared.. is very deep in the wisdom and or how it is these two things ( concepts) are foundation to walk along on this Path ... knowing it is the Way  and or that Way to retain out peace among one another.. manifesting Righteousness!

Ron shared it , but please allow me to make bold those words that seem to contrast what it is we can experience ..

One appraoch ..."if according to the fleah " leaves us on a path in which the mind is trying to respond to what it is seeing , but in this intelectual search   = I must think through  on how to stay on the path or I will be found guilty by those around me of not loving, myself, others, and or God Himself.

Shame will come..and I will be a shamed  and be found Ashamed which is something of a mark on ones countnance that cannot be covered over ( even with riches)  All this being the results of something happening within our very being ,, mnaifesting our being a being made in the Image and Likeness of God..... who may or may not expereince the Character of Our Lord , BY acknowledging the Holy Spirt so as to honor His presence.

Susan tells us:

Ron touched on something that I totally forgot about, but so important, fear, worry, anxiety stems from pride, when we feel powerless, unable to change circumstances or even ourselves, yet try to deal and react by the arm of the flesh (fear) we arent abiding in him, then we experience unrest...I see pride is the root of this (and God knows Ive struggled in this area) especially more recently Ive had some stuff happen that triggered fear and yes feel powerless and yes have reacted from fear and emotions...so seeing the root of it "pride" I repent

but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

The deeds of the body?

This is very interesting , in that the concept here is that the body is given to peform it's deeds inorder to live.  And . if so ..why would you want to kill them?

The wisdom here is they are part of you own being who you are , but in principle they : Those millions of cells  that make up who you are (a body)  have no way of staying on the Path of life "on their own".

That includes all the brian cells you have...

In a divine reationship we are able to abide "IN Spirit" and if so it is by Relating in this Spirit ...we come to the wisdom of how it is our spirit can secure who we are by the  present Revealtions of Christ , on earth , being who we are in Righteous Manner which is pleasing to Our Father in Heaven .

It is in this Way relating... They Our Lord , Father, and the Holy Spirit are one .....as Bro. Ron shares...

Repentance turns one from trusting in his or her mind (mental ability) and enguages the spirit . righting the order of the Relationship within ones "own" being...

By and By we move from that point on with the Spirit in charge of what the mind and body demands of you to do to balance your needs by your deeds...

Self-control is manifested in your approach things... "now " in your faith to honor Our Lord by using His wisdom to stay on that path.

On this path you are able to walk in love in securing your own experience without having to minuplate , project and or extend your idenity .. by running in fear of not being accepted and or hiding in fear of (standing) trying to do something that will bring peace to you , others and God Himself.. having thought it to be the right thing to do to be loved...

Seen as the : the spirit of bondage again to fear,

In principle the spirit of bondage is manifested when ones spirit has given over to the mind of the being it realtes to in a body of flesh.. trying to respond in fear of not ............................................................ ..?

I will stop here to see if any would like to fill in the answer!

Bro. Larry
