The Remnant of Israel

11 I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means!^{#cen-NIV-28211A" title="See cross-reference A - A )'>} I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham,^{#cen-NIV-28211B" title="See cross-reference B - B )'>} from the tribe of Benjamin.^{#cen-NIV-28211C" title="See cross-reference C - C )'>} ²God did not reject his people,^{#cen-NIV-28212D" title="See cross-reference D - D )'>} whom he foreknew.^{#cen-NIV-28212E" title="See cross-reference E - E )'>} Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel: ³“Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me”^{#fen-NIV-28213a" title="See footnote a - a ]'>[a]}?^{#cen-NIV-28213F" title="See cross-reference F - F )'>} ⁴And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”^{#fen-NIV-28214b" title="See footnote b - b ]'>[}b]^{#cen-NIV-28214G" title="See cross-reference G - G )'>} ⁵So too, at the present time there is a remnant^{#cen-NIV-28215H" title="See cross-reference H - H )'>} chosen by grace.^{#cen-NIV-28215I" title="See cross-reference I - I )'>} ⁶And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works;^{#cen-NIV-28216J" title="See cross-reference J - J )'>} if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

⁷What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain.^{#cen-NIV-28217K" title="See cross-reference K - K )'>} The elect among them did, but the others were hardened,^{#cen-NIV-28217L" title="See cross-reference L - L )'>} ⁸as it is written:

“God gave them a spirit of stupor,
eyes that could not see
and ears that could not hear,^{#cen-NIV-28218M" title="See cross-reference M - M )'>}
to this very day.”^{#fen-NIV-28218c" title="See footnote c - c ]'>[}c]^{#cen-NIV-28218N" title="See cross-reference N - N )'>}

⁹And David says:

“May their table become a snare and a trap,
a stumbling block and a retribution for them.
¹⁰May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,^{#cen-NIV-28220O" title="See cross-reference O - O )'>}
and their backs be bent forever.”^{#fen-NIV-28220d" title="See footnote d - d ]'>[}d]^{#cen-NIV-28220P" title="See cross-reference P - P )'>}

Ingrafted Branches

¹¹Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all!^{#cen-NIV-28221Q" title="See cross-reference Q - Q )'>} Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles^{#cen-NIV-28221R" title="See cross-reference R - R )'>} to make Israel envious.^{#cen-NIV-28221S" title="See cross-reference S - S )'>} ¹²But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles,^{#cen-NIV-28222T" title="See cross-reference T - T )'>} how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!

¹³I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles,^{#cen-NIV-28223U" title="See cross-reference U - U )'>} I take pride in my ministry ¹⁴in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy^{#cen-NIV-28224V" title="See cross-reference V - V )'>} and save^{#cen-NIV-28224W" title="See cross-reference W - W )'>} some of them. ¹⁵For if their rejection brought reconciliation^{#cen-NIV-28225X" title="See cross-reference X - X )'>} to the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?^{#cen-NIV-28225Y" title="See cross-reference Y - Y )'>} ¹⁶If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits^{#cen-NIV-28226Z" title="See cross-reference Z - Z )'>} is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷If some of the branches have been broken off,^{#cen-NIV-28227AA" title="See cross-reference AA - AA )'>} and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others^{#cen-NIV-28227AB" title="See cross-reference AB - AB )'>} and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, ¹⁸do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.^{#cen-NIV-28228AC" title="See cross-reference AC - AC )'>} ¹⁹You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” ²⁰Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith.^{#cen-NIV-28230AD" title="See cross-reference AD - AD )'>} Do not be arrogant,^{#cen-NIV-28230AE" title="See cross-reference AE - AE )'>} but tremble.^{#cen-NIV-28230AF" title="See cross-reference AF - AF )'>} ²¹For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

²²Consider therefore the kindness^{#cen-NIV-28232AG" title="See cross-reference AG - AG )'>} and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue^{#cen-NIV-28232AH" title="See cross-reference AH - AH )'>} in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.^{#cen-NIV-28232AI" title="See cross-reference AI - AI )'>} ²³And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.^{#cen-NIV-28233AJ" title="See cross-reference AJ - AJ )'>} ²⁴After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree,^{#cen-NIV-28234AK" title="See cross-reference AK - AK )'>} how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

All Israel Will Be Saved

²⁵I do not want you to be ignorant^{#cen-NIV-28235AL" title="See cross-reference AL - AL )'>} of this mystery,^{#cen-NIV-28235AM" title="See cross-reference AM - AM )'>} brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited:^{#cen-NIV-28235AN" title="See cross-reference AN - AN )'>} Israel has experienced a hardening^{#cen-NIV-28235AO" title="See cross-reference AO - AO )'>} in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in,^{#cen-NIV-28235AP" title="See cross-reference AP - AP )'>} ²⁶and in this way^{#fen-NIV-28236e" title="See footnote e - e ]'>[}e] all Israel will be saved.^{#cen-NIV-28236AQ" title="See cross-reference AQ - AQ )'>} As it is written:

“The deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.

²⁸As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies^{#cen-NIV-28238AS" title="See cross-reference AS - AS )'>} for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs,^{#cen-NIV-28238AT" title="See cross-reference AT - AT )'>} ²⁹for God’s gifts and his call^{#cen-NIV-28239AU" title="See cross-reference AU - AU )'>} are irrevocable.^{#cen-NIV-28239AV" title="See cross-reference AV - AV )'>} ³⁰Just as you who were at one time disobedient^{#cen-NIV-28240AW" title="See cross-reference AW - AW )'>} to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, ³¹so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now^{#fen-NIV-28241h" title="See footnote h - h ]'>[}h] receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. ³²For God has bound everyone over to disobedience^{#cen-NIV-28242AX" title="See cross-reference AX - AX )'>} so that he may have mercy on them all.
