Your relationship with the Lord: is it the same after you are married as when you were single? Does being married affect your closesness with God at all?

No it shouldn't.  God should always be your first love.  It is God first then your spouse and children second.  To put your spouse first would be making them an idol.

My marriage is very important to me however God is first and foremost in my life.  I have struggled because at times I did not want to be intimate with my husband because I felt like I could not focus on God, so I received some very valuable advice from Open Heaven - read 1 Cor. 7 1:7.

Hi Cynthia,

Yes, I Cor. 7 does give us lots of knowledge on our marriage relationships, etc.

The biggest reason people struggle with this question stems from whether Jesus is LORD, supremely interested in guiding, blessing every part of their nature including marital intimacy. Some would mistakenly tell you its a seperate part of you that has to be hidden , held in a seperate compartment, they desire to make what is pure and holy as evil. Determine in your mind with the LORD to allow Him to be a part of everything you do, talk to HIM at every moment and u will be free .

marriage is a chance for two people to become one, they have to chose that however.. The biggest issue i see jess is that people arent walking in the same direction with the LORD , and the individual fight with the flesh becomes intensified when u are also battling someone elses flesh issues. For a true marriage union to be blessed, both must resolve to crucify that flesh, become one in purpose, unity, and both resolve to not make the other their scource. But The LORD is first and supreme in all areas.

So to answer your question truthfully, with no sugar coating, yeah its tougher, make sure u are marrying in His PERFECT will, and u have tested the other partys committment to covenant with you and God...

If one's husband does not serve the Lord one can feel pulled in two different directions even in their own home.

Thanks Richard.  I have this daily battle in my home.  Its hard, very hard to please God and an non-God-fearing man.

Paul put it very well when he stated that for those who
can handle it should not marry as it can stop you doing
things for God. This is true. You cannot do things that
would put you marriage in danger. If you have kids, you
also have to think about them. It is not that you are
putting your spouse or your kids first, it is that you
are being a good steward of the people God has entrusted to you.
However God did instigate the marriage. In fact in my
case he arranged my marriage. We found out after we knew
we were going to be married and were engaged that we
were also compatible.
God thinks marriage is a good thing and that it
demonstrates what our relationship with him is supposed
to be like.
God is good in that he never places a burden on a
marriage that could cause conflict between Him and our
spouse. When we are listening and obedient to God you
and your spouse always move in the same direction.
God would never put you in a situation where you would
have to choose between Him and your spouse otherwise why
on earth would he be so against divorce. Remember, once
you are married you are as one to Him.

So if you can handle being single, enjoy and serve God.
If you can't handle being single, enjoy, be married and
serve God.
