Haitian Prosecutor Urges Six Month Sentence for Laura Silsby
by Michael Winter, USA Today
PORT AU PRINCE, HAITI - Prosecutor Sonel Jean-Francois told a Port-au-Prince court yesterday that Silsby knew she had broken Haitian law.
She told the court that she thought the children were orphans whose homes were destroyed in the earthquake. As it turned out, all the children had at least one living parent, who had turned their children over in hopes of securing better lives for them.
Silsby is being tried on a charge of arranging irregular travel, which carries a maximum prison sentence of three years. If convicted, she will be credited for time served.
