Rifqa Bary Diagnosed with Cancer
CBN News
Rifqa Bary, the Ohio teen who fled to Florida after her Muslim parents discovered she'd become a Christian, has been diagnosed with uterine cancer.
Bary's attorney says the 17-year-old has already undergone two surgeries and is preparing for a third surgery Thursday. He said she only released information about her health so people can pray for her.
Jamal Jivanjee, a Florida ministry leader close to Bary, sent an email to her friends and supporters saying, "Her situation is very serious" and she will need further treatment.
"As soon as Rifqa heals from the major surgery that she will undergo this Thursday, it is expected that she will need to undergo several rounds of chemotherapy," he said. "...[Rifqa] is in desperate need of an army of supporters to know about what is occurring regarding her situation, and to pray for her healing."
Bary has been living with an Ohio foster family since last fall.
She fled to Florida in July 2009, claiming her parents threatened to kill her for converting to Christianity.
A judge later ordered Bary to return to her home state. She was allowed to remain in foster care while attending therapy with her parents.
A final custody agreement has yet to be reached, however Bary turns 18 in August and will then be able to make her own decisions.
