Impeachment Threatened over Any More Prisoner Swaps

CBN News

Lawmakers angry over the Taliban prisoner swap for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdhal are threatening impeachment if the president releases any more prisoners without congressional approval.

The administration exchanged five Taliban leaders from Guantanamo Bay for Bergdahl's release without giving Congress the required 30 days notice.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., sounded that warning, saying "I believe the decision to release these prisoners put our country in jeopardy."

Graham is among many Republicans who worry President Barack Obama may try to shut down Guantanamo in the face of repeated congressional opposition.

He was also part of bi-partisan group of senators who met on Capitol Hill late Wednesday night for a closed door briefing on the growing controversy.

Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin also raised concerens about five Taliban leaders who were freed in the exchange.

"These are all high level people. These are people who basically have the ability to go back and hit the ground running, and we're concerned about that," he told reporters.

Meanwhile, Bergdahl remains hospitalized in Germany and may be there longer than anticipated.

But there will be no longer a hero's welcome for Bergdahl when he does return to Idaho hometown.

Organizers have canceled celebrations because of security concerns and the nationwide debate surrounding over his service. Those who served alongside him have called him a deserter.
