Conflicting Reports About Meriam Ibrahim's Freedom

CBN News

There are conflicting reports on the freedom of Meriam Ibrahim and her family. She's the Sudanese mother condemned to die for refusing to renounce her Christian faith.

Tina Ramirez, with Hardwired, Inc., a human rights group working with to help Ibrahim and her attorneys, told CBN News that Meriam and her family are back in prison.

She says Merian is charged with falsifying documents to travel. Reportedly, these are the same documents given to Meriam by the United States government.

Ramirez says more pressure needs to be brought to both the U.S. and Sudanese governments to secure Meriam's release.

The American Center for Law and Justice is another group working for Meriam's release.

The ACLJ's Jordan Sekulow says now is the time for a maximum effort by the Obama Administration to secure safe passage to America for the entire family.

Sekulow says that Meriam and her family have been detained by the National Intelligence and Security Services of Sudan who do not answer to criminal courts. He says they are outside the judicial system.

"We've been through this too many times in these cases of persecution in countries that are similar to Sudan when people are released, but that's not the end of the story; they're not safe yet," Sekulow said.

The 27-year-old Ibrahim was originally sentenced to 100 lashes and execution by hanging because the government says her father was a Muslim. Therefore, under Islamic law known as Sharia, she's not allowed to become a Christian, even though she contends she was never a Muslim in the first place.

Ibrahim, who was jailed along with her toddler son, was forced to give birth to her second child, a daughter, while in prison.
