Footprints in Wellington, South Africa: ALICT: 31 July - 1 August 2014 And - YWAM Potchefstroom: Nation Builders Worldview Seminar 13-15 August 2014

Since 2004 Hein van Wyk assisted in facilitating Biblical Worldview Training at the African Leadership Institute for Community Transformation (ALICT) at Bergkroon Faith Center in Wellington, South Africa.
Bergkroon Faith Centre is situated 5 km from Wellington (Western Cape) on the Bain's Kloof Pass road. It is a very unique campsite due to its panoramic view of the Paarl and Wellington valley, the great variety of fynbos and the towering Hawekwa Mountains.

The vision of ALICT is to see communities and nations in Africa and the world transformed through a new generation of Christian leaders. Their purpose is the empowerment of emerging leaders to facilitate sustainable transformation towards healthy reconciled communities based on Biblical principles (
www.alict.org). The first ALICT was held in 2003 and, including the students this year, 294 people from 93 countries attended this Leadership Development Course.

ALICT 2014 was attended by 28 delegates from 26 different countries.

The training on Biblical Worldview focused on 5 important elements of strategic thinking: Discern the Time, Discover the Kingdom, Dream Africa, Disciple in Worldview and Design & Deliver through the Church.

The Conference started with a call to the students to discern the time. Time is position and therefore determines performance. It’s important to know the times, just as the tribe of Issachar did many years ago: “of the sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel had to do…” – 1 Chron 12:32

The world is in turmoil and is in desperate search of meaning and hope; something which is only available in the Kingdom of God. The call in this day and age is for a rediscovery of the Kingdom of God. As Jesus Christ is the central figure of time and eternity, so His ever-increasing Kingdom is both the goal and direction of history. The Kingdom of God encompasses all things in heaven and earth and has no end. It has the largest government on earth, has the greatest power, is driven by unconditional love and will last forever.

The Church needs a rediscovery of the absolute of the Kingdom of God. A Kingdom focus will bring meaning and purpose back to life, point it to new goals and provide the power to move on and to fulfill these goals. The Kingdom gives us our first priority and our final goal. It gives us a grid through which we can view all the realities of life.

Until ALICT 2015, Soli Deo Gloria!

Footprints at YWAM Potchefstroom: Nation Builders Worldview Seminar 13-15 August 2014

Hein van Wyk facilitated Biblical Worldview training at Youth With A Mission’s (YWAM) Base in Potchefstroom, South Africa from 13-15 August 2014.
YWAM Potch is a university base. They do ministry and training in poor surrounding areas through various aspects of community involvement.

The Nation Builders Worldview Seminar is a 3-week worldview seminar based entirely on studying the bible inductively. It looks at the importance of the word and the impact of worldview; how we understand it, approach it and apply it.

We live in a world where truth has become relative and worship is restricted to our Sunday church services and midweek cell group meetings; to missionary work and ”full-time ministries.” The goal of the Nations Building Seminar is to emphasize the priesthood of all believers, Coram Deo and the awakening and equipping of missionaries in the market place and other domains of society.
The Course includes the history of the church, New Testament and Old Testament timeline and the inductive study of a number of Bible books, focusing on:
  • understanding worldview,
  • the history and progression of missions,
  • importance of character,
  • identifying spheres of influence in the word and
  • how to represent God in these spheres.
Youth With A Mission is an international volunteer movement of Christians from many backgrounds, cultures and Christian traditions, dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Also known as YWAM, their purpose is simply to know God and to make Him known.

When YWAM began in 1960, their main focus was giving young people opportunities to demonstrate the love of Jesus to the whole world, according to His command in Mark 16:15. Today, they still focus on youth, but also have members (known as “YWAMers”) of almost every age. Many of their short-term efforts have grown into long-term endeavors that have impacted lives and nations.
YWAM has a decentralized structure that encourages new vision and the exploration of new ways to change lives through training, convey the message of the gospel and care for those in need. They are currently operating in more than 1000 locations in over 180 countries, with a staff of over 18,000.

The expected outcomes of the Hope for Africa’s Worldview Matters Taining is the awakening, equipping, and mobilization of the Church to:
  • Discover God’s glorious vision of comprehensive healing and transformation of the nations, described by Jesus Christ as “The Kingdom of God.”
  • Adopt a Kingdom worldview and then live it out by taking truth, goodness, and beauty into every sphere of society.
  • Practice demonstrations of the Kingdom through a ministry of outreach to the community, showing Christ’s love through works of service in all areas of life.

During the Conference Hein talked about the importance of the times we are living in and the need to discern the moment. The times are calling for a rediscovery of the Kingdom of God; it’s time for the Church to understand her role in society and the importance of having a dream for transformed communities, working from a Christ-centered worldview/perspective on life.

The Kingdom of God stands central in Worldview matters. Ron Boehme in his book “Leadership for the 21st Century reminds us that “seeing the Kingdom gives a focal point to our lives, families and ministries. It gives mission to the Church – a task to fulfill. It gives us our first priority and our final goal. It gives meaning to history, and excitement for the future and it gives us a grid through which we can view all the realities of life.”

The Kingdom is the whole Gospel for the whole person. Life in any other way is a muddled, maddening and impossible way to live. The Kingdom as a clearly defined and workable system for order and influence in our daily lives is what is needed. Over the centuries the Kingdom was reduced by putting it in denominational and theological moulds. It was narrowed down to something that will happen one day in the future when Jesus comes again; something in heaven and not on earth. It’s essential to know that the Kingdom is not only future. The Kingdom came, is coming and will come. The Kingdom is now and not yet.

Hein introduced to the participants the concept of worldview and how worldview works. He presented a brief overview of God's transforming story and the critical importance of a biblical understanding of what and how we know?, what is ultimate reality?, what is man?, where is history going?, what is the nature of good and evil?, and what is the nature of nature? Biblical answers to all of these basic questions are critical for the development of our communities and nations.

Hein continued by building on the Kingdom worldview foundation by introducing principles of wholistic development. It presented a challenge to Church leaders to penetrate culture with Truth, saturate communities by demonstrating God’s love and to occupy the domains of society through sacrificial service. It also included Seed Projects which introduced a practical planning strategy and methods for doing development with local resources.

Thanks to Kudzai and Rhulani for a blessed time. Looking forward connecting with you again in future.

Soli Deo Gloria!
