EMERGENCY APPEAL
Thousands dead in Nepal - please respond now

Nepal was struck by a massive 7.8 earthquake today, and significant aftershocks are continuing. Buildings have been toppled and the quake has also triggered avalanches in the Himalayas. The death toll is expected to be in the thousands as search and rescue teams continue to work. Please send help now.

PLEASE HELP
DONATE NOW

World Vision is mobilizing staff and resources to assist communities right now. We have 200 staff on the ground already, and they are ready to respond with temporary shelter, food, hygiene kits, water, emergency health interventions, and more. But we need your help.

"Infrastructure is down all over the city," said Philip Ewert, World Vision's operations director in Kathmandu. "Power is out with limited internet access. Walls and water tanks are damaged. We are also getting reports that people are trapped in temples and other public buildings as there was a large festival here Saturday."

Please respond now with a gift to help those devastated by this earthquake. And pray for Nepal as they continue to suffer from aftershocks and for the long road ahead.

Gospel for Asia
Dear ron,

I'm sad to tell you an earthquake struck Nepal today and has killed more than 1,000 people. Rescuers are searching through rubble for survivors.

We have lost some of our church buildings and Bridge of Hope centers in the devastation.

Please pray for the hurting and do what you can to help them. We will update you as soon as we are able. Thank you.

Yours for those in Nepal,

K.P. Yohannan

Nepal Seeks Aid as Death Toll Continues to Climb

Video>

CBN News

The government of Nepal says it will need a large amount of international assistance to recover from Saturday's massive 7.8 earthquake.

As the death toll keeps climbing by the hour, now over 3,600, officials still don't know what happened to small villages at the epicenter of Nepal's massive quake. Landslides are hindering access and experts say in cases like this, entire villages can be swallowed by falling rock.

Meanwhile, aftershocks continue.

"The earth is really moving now. Everyone is running through the streets!" BBC reporter Justin Rowlatt said.

Saturday's quake spread horror from Kathmandu to Mt. Everest, where it triggered an avalanche that buried part of the base camp packed with foreign climbers.

"The ground is shaking," Josh Kobusch says on a video posted on YouTube.

Scientists say major quakes in the area, where two huge tectonic plates converge, occur about every 80 years. The last one took place 81 years ago.

Meanwhile, the rescue effort is ongoing. Workers pulled one man through the window of a collapsed window as bystanders applauded. A young girl was also pulled to safety.

"Most of them are suffering from head injuries, while food, water and power remain scarce," Dr. Santosh Poudel said.

One expert said the long-term cost of reconstruction in Nepal could be more than $5 billion -- or about 20 percent of Nepal's GDP. That means massive international financial and technical assistance will be vital for long-term reconstruction.

Nepal's government appealed for more help from the international community, saying it is short of everything from paramedics to electricity.

CBN Disaster Relief is already working to provide food, shelter and medical care from neighboring India.

"We really want to pray that the love of Jesus Christ can -- and the hope in Him can -- reach these people and we want to be able to do that," CBN's Regional Director for India Priti Choudhry told CBN News. "We want to be able to share the love of God with these people right now."

Nepal quake: in dire need of aid

Nepal (MNN) — The glory of Kathmandu dates back to ancient times. More recent history connected conquering Mount Everest to the Himalayan kingdom. The mystery of the Hindus was stylized in cinema history, too.

Today, much of that is gone. 96 hours ago, the area was hit by the worst earthquake the country has experienced in 80 years. By Monday afternoon (EDT), the death toll had soared past 4,000. Those numbers did not include the remote villages. More than 7,100 people were injured in the quake with tens of thousands of people left homeless. Joe Handley with Asian Access says after the major quake, there have been dozens of severe aftershocks. The scene, as described by A2 partners: “Buildings falling down, right and left; many churches have been destroyed. Many pastors’ homes have been destroyed. They’re just looking at their people, seeing the devastation roll out.” Death tolls are expected to exceed 5,000.

In an earlier MNN story, Gospel For Asia shared concerns that a great number of the victims could be Christians. Handley explains, “The Nepalese church meets on Saturday instead of Sunday, so the earthquake struck right as everyone was in the middle of church; so they rushed outside, only to see the devastating impact on their country.”

Tens of thousands are homeless. Makeshift tent cities have sprung up, although stormy weather forecasts and dropping temperatures adds misery to equation for survivors. Nepal’s government is begging for help. “They’re worried about water shortage, food shortage, and electrical shortage. Many of the hospitals have fallen apart, so medical care is a huge problem.” Handley adds, “Doctors in the city estimate that they need a thousand more beds just for the initial needs in Kathmandu.”

Early recovery estimates are rolling in long-term economic costs in excess of $5 billion — around 2% of Nepal’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) — which, in a word, is “devastating.” The A2 church network is mobilizing, even though many of the leaders are experiencing loss, themselves. “The pastor who was talking to us was from a village halfway between Kathmandu and Mount Everest. He said his village was completely leveled. He lost his home.”

However, this isn’t the first time A2 has dealt with natural disaster. “We just went through this with the huge disaster that hit Japan and how we were able to see churches mobilized to be the body of Christ,” Handley explains. That experience taught the ministry how leadership training and personal investment in relationships in the name of Christ come together to make recovery real, on a timeline no government organization can match.

Under the Pray, Give, or Go banner, Handley says prayer is key. “We’re praying that this disaster could have profound spiritual impacts. We know that that starts from meeting physical needs–just being the hands and feet of Jesus.” Giving and Going are connected right now. “Right now, all the reports I get [indicate] that they just need the experts in. We’re holding back from sending people, at this point, trying to get aid and supplies and funding into the churches to be able to be those ‘hands and feet of Christ.'”
