Nepalese leaving gods after second quake

Nepal (MNN) — Nepalese are afraid to go inside any building. For the second time in less than three weeks, Nepal was shaken by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake, leaving many dead and hundreds more injured. The epicenter, this time, located near Mount Everest, took down buildings already shaken by the April 25 quake.

President of Asian Access Joe Handley says, “The reports fresh from the field [are] that there’s just a great deal of fear. People are in buildings that aren’t very solid, and so they’ve raced outside. Everyone is trying to get into the open air, or in a tent in Kathmandu.”

The earthquake is shaking the faith of many Hindus in this predominately-Hindu nation. Garnesh Pradhan told USA Today, “Not only Hundu[ism] I left, [but] all the gods I left.”

What does that mean for groups like Asian Access? “People are grappling with ‘How do the gods that I serve allow something so tragic to occur?’ Pastors are well-equipped to handle the spiritual side of things,” says Handley. “They’re also often the best when it comes to emotional care.”

According to Handley, these uncertain times are laying the groundwork for churches to provide tangible aid. “We’re trying to mobilize aid to probably about 30 churches that are right in the middle of the worst-hit areas, to be a point of light in these neighborhoods.”

Pastors and motivated Christians are reaching out with emergency aid as well as with the message of the Gospel.

Thirty year ago there were hardly any Christians in Nepal. “The Christian population is small but has been growing for the past 30 years,” says Handley. “In fact, they say it’s the fastest-growing church on planet Earth during these three decades.”

As you support churches in Nepal, you’re helping the church have more credibility in a nation that used to oppress Christians.

Unfortunately, there’s a problem. Handley explains, “The giving globally isn’t keeping up with the massive needs on the ground. So, we’re just praying that Christians will respond.”

The United Nations reports they’ve only received $20 million in emergency aid support in their $110 million goal. Other groups are finding similar response.

Second Nepal earthquake brings back nightmarish memories

Nepal (BGR/MNN) — A powerful new earthquake rattled Nepal on Tuesday May 12. According to BBC, at least 37 have died and more than 1,000 have been injured.

The 7.3-magnitude quake came 17 days after a massive earthquake destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes and killed over 8,000 people. As the epicenter, Namche Bazar, is near Mount Everest, the tremor triggered a series of landslides.

Tuesday’s earthquake will add to the already-dismal statistics as rescue workers once again begin the arduous task of rescue and recovery.

The Southern Baptist relief teams have been providing for Nepal since the first earthquake, and now they are searching for the newest damage and emergency needs.

Baptist Global Response, the Southern Baptist humanitarian organization with which IMB partners in disaster response, is coordinating the efforts. BGR’s Nepal Earthquake Response will continue helping those who are suffering by providing basic needs like water, shelter, food, and healthcare.

Francis Horton, who is coordinating the earthquake response for BGR, said one of his teams was on the mountain when the quake hit. As they were descending, they came upon a recently-collapsed house and offered their help. Fortunately, the family had been outside when it fell, and the team was able to provide comfort.

“This quake really brought back nightmarish memories for many people,” Horton said. “Immediately, businesses shut doors and buildings emptied into the streets.”

The earthquake hit 47 miles east of Kathmandu on the way to Everest Base Camp. It could be felt as far away as Delhi, India and Dhaka, Bangladesh. According to BBC, three people were killed in India.

Landslides have cut off roads to the main town near the border of Tibet.

One local Nepali pastor asked for prayer as reports of two major landslides have caused havoc in the area, on top of damage from the most-recent earthquake.

As strong tremors were felt in Kathmandu and other areas affected by last month’s quake, rumors of another large earthquake circulated the country for weeks. More than 100 aftershocks took place the first week, and hundreds of thousands slept outside in tarps or under the open sky as they feared buildings would come crashing down around them.

That same fear surfaces now.

“Looks like it will be another night outside,” a local Christian conveyed over Facebook. He was in the exact same building when the April 25 quake hit. He said the building in Kathmandu shook and swayed, then everyone ran to the streets in panic.

“Everyone is too frightened to sleep inside tonight,” he wrote. His family will be sleeping under a tarp provided through BGR relief funds. “The aftershocks are still going, and we have no idea if buildings are safe.”

The extent of the loss of buildings is still undetermined from the April 25 quake. Nepal’s National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) estimates around 299,588 homes were destroyed and 269,107 were damaged in the first earthquake. They still had thousands more to check out for stability before this May 12 tremor hit.

BGR is working with a Southern Baptist partner to check out as many homes as possible. Their contact was caught in the first earthquake with a team in the mountains. He opted to extend his stay to work with local believers in assessing homes.

Horton said BGR will continue its plan of “Disaster to Development,” with added attention to the immediate needs generated by the newest earthquake.

“We are seeking to meet needs as we find them and to implement a plan that will be a 6-12 month response,” Horton said, adding that BGR is partnering with local churches in this response. “People in the hills are already beginning to construct shelter that will get them through the rainy season. We want to help them along in this process so they can attend to other issues, such as farming the crops that will be food security for next year.

“They are determined to reconstruct. They need to get family life back to normal,” he said. “We want to help them do that. We want to be the hands and feet of Christ.”

BGR invites you to help Nepal by praying, donating, or volunteering to go.

Gospel for Asia Redoubles Disaster Relief Efforts in Nepal

Written by

News Release from Gospel for Asia (www.gfa.org)

Gospel for Asia team in Nepal second earthquakeKATHMANDU, NEPAL (ANS – May 13, 2015) – Gospel for Asia Compassion Service Teams in India are assessing the destruction caused by a 7.3-magnitude earthquake yesterday that killed at least 37 people and injured more than 1,100. Relief workers right away began responding to immediate needs by providing medical care and relief supplies, as well as continuing to offer crisis counseling and prayers for the victims. They are also working to determine damage to churches, Bible schools and children’s centers.

Supported by Gospel for Asia, teams from Believers Church were already in Nepal to deliver food, clothing and other supplies to victims of an April 25 quake. The Associated Press reported the earlier disaster killed more than 8,150 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless. In addition to the 37 victims today, the news service said the quake killed 16 people in India and one in Tibet.

Raahi, a Gospel for Asia photojournalist, said his team had stopped for a rest while driving to a rural area to deliver relief supplies when yesterday’s earthquake struck, just as they were getting out of their car. The tremor prompted screams from people and sent many scrambling for the first available open space.

“People were screaming and crying,” he said. “Kathmandu now looks like a ghost town, with only 25 percent of the shops remaining open. People are afraid to enter any buildings. Restaurants are mostly closed. Many have stopped coming into Kathmandu to work. They are too afraid.”

Many people will be sleeping outside in Kathmandu, including the Gospel for Asia-supported relief workers who gave away the last of their temporary relief tents earlier today.

“There is fear among everyone,” Raahi said. “You can just feel it. People who have already lost so much are beginning to lose hope. Tomorrow we will continue on with relief work. Pray that we can get to our destination safely.”

Gospel for Asia has worked in Nepal for more than 25 years. For decades, the ministry has also provided disaster relief throughout South Asia when tragedy strikes areas it serves, such as after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Gospel for Asia supports 450 churches, 20 Bridge of Hope children centers and Bible schools in Nepal. Some were destroyed or damaged by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake in April, Nepal’s worst in 80 years. Many church leaders and members lost their homes or can no longer safely live in them.

Gospel for Asia (www.gfa.org ) is a mission organization sharing the love of Jesus across South Asia.

Dozens Believed Dead in Second Nepal Quake

Video>

CBN News

Another major earthquake has struck Nepal less than three weeks after a quake killed more than 8,100 people. This time the epicenter was near the border with China.

Dozens more are believed dead and about 1,000 are known injured this time.

A lawmaker was addressing parliament in the afternoon when the camera started to shake and terrified lawmakers fled the auditorium.

The magnitude 7.3 quake hit a remote region near the Chinese border between the capital of Kathmandu and Mount Everest.

"This was a jolt just like the big one last month, though it was not that long," resident Avinav Shrestha said. "I was very scared -- thought anything can happen to me."

The government said several buildings collapsed in an isolated town that has become a hub for humanitarian aid after the April 25 quake. A rescue team from the agency has begun searching through the wreckage in the town.

The death toll from the first quake more than two weeks ago is now more than 8,100 people and still climbing. It also injured nearly 18,000 and it flattened mountain villages and destroyed buildings.

At 7.8 on the Richter scale, it was Nepal's worst recorded earthquake since 1934. And there have been more than 150 aftershocks.

Today's 7.3 quake was two miles deeper in the earth, making it not as strong. It was followed by at least six strong aftershocks.

Video from Operation Blessing shows patients at one of the big hospitals in Kathmandu. They had to be moved outside after Tuesday's quake.

Operation Blessing has been on the scene since the first quake, providing clean water and food, often in remote, unreached villages.
