Nigeria: Free medical care and gospels

Violence between Christians and Muslims in Jos has scarred and segregated the two groups that Doctor Chris Isichei and his surgeon wife Mercy minister to at his Hospital and ‘Faith Alive Clinic; offering free medical services from 300 to 400 patients every day. 60% of the patients are Christians and 40% Muslims. Almost the entire medical staff are volunteers. 90% of the patients are HIV positive. Patients are offered training in sewing, knitting, computers, driving, and kitchen services. A Christian discipleship program is woven into the skills training and 100 graduate each quarter. Faith Alive also has a free school with a Christian curriculum. Those who can't afford school elsewhere go to their school.’ Every morning and evening Doctor Chris, his medical staff and patients take part in a devotional at the hospital. The Gospel message is presented at each gathering with an opportunity to respond. When patients are released but have no place to go, they stay in transitional housing.

Praise:

God for the social and spiritual aspect to the hospital, may they continue to know His protection, provision and leading. (Ph.1:19)

Renegade biker rode up mountain an atheist, came down a Christian

He was a hard-living, death-defying biker from Wales on a road trip across America. When his brakes failed on a steep mountain curve, God’s miraculous intervention changed his life forever. As he descended from the mountains on a steep, windy road, an oil leak caused Reg’s brakes to fail. ‘Every 200 yards there’s a hairpin turn,’ he recalls. But then something very unusual happened. He couldn’t let go of his handlebars. Suddenly, defying speed and gravity, the bike mysteriously stood upright on its own, slowed down, and pulled into the only run-off on the mountain. His friend Paul, pulled in behind him. ‘How did you stop it?’ he shouted. ‘I didn’t,’ Reg replied. He knew he didn’t stop the bike. Several witnesses said the impossible just happened. ‘On that mountain God showed me I had lost control,’ Reg says. He suddenly recognized that God answered his prayers in a dramatic, miraculous fashion. ‘I should have died on that mountain.’

Praise:

God for His miraculous ways and how He can do the impossible. (Mt.19:26)

Annual disability sport festival for Olympic Park

An annual festival of disability sport is to be staged at the Olympic Park as part of a £2m package of future Paralympic plans at the east London venue. It is to be linked to a programme of training at sporting clubs in surrounding boroughs, said the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC). The site will reopen from July 2013. Sport England figures show east London has a lower uptake in disabled sports than the rest of London. The park - to be renamed the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park - will reopen in phases after £292m of investment. The LLDC said tens of thousands of people will benefit from its Paralympic Legacy Programme. The programme will help to create new homes, public spaces and sporting venues that are accessible, it said. The LLDC plans to introduce a range of sports for disabled people including wheelchair rugby, boccia, wheelchair basketball and Goalball in the Copper Box.

Pray:

that this development will bring a lasting legacy that will benefit the many thousands of paraplegics. (2Cor.4:15)

Christian charity donates wheelchairs to Paralympians

With Oscar Pistorius’ unexpected defeat in the men’s T44 200 metre race on Sunday night came an upsurge of interest in the technical side of the Paralympics, namely - do longer blades give the runner an advantage? Although Pistorius has always insisted that changing blades will not affect an athlete’s performance, what is evident is that the Paralympics - more so than the Olympics - are technology driven; the athletes rely on state of the art equipment to enable them to perform to the best of their ability. With this in mind, it is perhaps predictable but disappoining to hear that many Paralympians do not have access to the essential equipment that they need, or the funds to buy it. Through the Roof (www.throughtheroof.org), a Christian organization which donates wheelchairs and equipment to disabled people all around the world, has based itself in St John’s Church - right next to the Olympic park - to give away wheelchairs to Paralympians who need them.

Pray:

for the work of Through the Roof and for the many people who have benefited from their gifts. (2Cor.4:15)

Paralympic athletes 'working harder to break records'

The high number of records being broken at the London 2012 Paralympics is more down to the quality of athletes than improved technology, organisers say. At the half way point of the Games, 228 Paralympic records have been broken, compared with 339 in total at Beijing. Controversial comments by Blade Runner Oscar Pistorius have prompted questions about whether rules on technology used by athletes need to be tightened, but officials say records are being broken as athletes are working harder. ‘Our athletes are getting better training and better funding,’ said International Paralympics Committee Communications Director Craig Spence. There are now more Paralympic competitors who are full-time athletes rather than competing as a hobby, Mr Spence told the BBC. He added that the margin by which records were being broken was also plateauing, Athletes are getting better,’ said Mr Spence. ‘With hard work come more records.’

Pray:

for all the athletes that they will be rewarded for all their hard work. (Ps.103:22)

How murderball film changed view of disabled sport

Murderball, which followed the United States wheelchair rugby team during their 2004 Paralympic campaign, gathered a string of glowing critical reviews from the movie critics. The film centres on the USA and Canadian teams, following their fierce rivalry from the 2002 World Championships to Athens two years later. It gives an insight into the ferocity of the sport in which wheelchairs often collide at high speed. The Academy Awards Committee nominated the film for its prize as the best documentary of 2006. Empire Magazine said it ‘strips away the layers of delicacy with which the able-bodied treat the disabled’ to reveal ‘the spirit and joie de vivre of those to whom disability is their making, not breaking. When Murderball came out, everyone in a wheelchair saw the movie and wanted to play the sport, but you have to have limitations in all four limbs. Murderball really changed how people thought about people in wheelchairs. People now look at those in wheelchairs and see them for what they can do rather than what they can't do'.

Pray:

that the abilities that wheelchair users will have may not be restricted by the perceptions of those more able. (Dt.8:18b)

Churches have ‘prophetic duty’ to challenge poverty

Christians must not only serve the hungry and homeless in practical ways, but speak out against the economic injustice behind their poverty, says the head of Church Action on Poverty (CAP). Writing in the September edition of Reform magazine, Niall Cooper praised the work of Christians who are running hundreds of foodbanks and debt counselling centres across the country. However, he echoed the sentiments of Jim Wallis who recently said that Christians were ‘prophetic interrogators’ who should not only ‘keep pulling bodies out of the river, but send people upstream to see who or what is throwing them in’. Mr Cooper said the ‘prophetic duty’ of Christians demanded more than providing social services and issuing statements. So what can we do to ‘go upstream’ and work for economic justice locally?’ he asked. Mr Cooper proposed harnessing the power of the fairtrade movement to achieve economic justice closer to home.

Pray:

for God to inspire and encourage us all in His work. (Pr.14.31)

Esther Rantzen: kids are ‘haunted’ by internet porn

Internet pornography is ‘warping’ children’s understanding of sex and leading them to mimic ‘aggressive, harmful and dangerous’ behaviour, Esther Rantzen has warned. Miss Rantzen, the founder of ChildLine, says the number of youngsters ringing the helpline who have ‘been deeply alarmed by watching pornography has shot up by 34 per cent in the past year’. She said: ‘We received 641 calls from children who had been exposed to sexually indecent material - more than 50 a month. The stuff our callers see is horrifying, and has stayed in their memories, haunting and frightening them’, the former That’s Life presenter added. The stark warning comes amidst a Government consultation on protecting children online. Miss Rantzen backs an ‘opt-in’ system which would automatically block adult content. Those who wanted to view such materials would be required to contact their Internet service provider. See also the Safetynet campaign petition www.premier@premierchristianmedia.co.uk

Pray:

for much tighter regulation of the way that such materials can be accessed. (Ro.12:2)

Renewed call for economic jubilee

Hundreds of activists across the UK are signing up to a new Jubilee for Justice call for countries afflicted by debt. In addition, more than 200 faith leaders have so far shown their support by signing a letter, which will be delivered to the Prime Minister, David Cameron, later in this Jubilee year. The Jubilee for Justice petition calls for cancellation of the unjust debts of the most indebted nations, but also for just and progressive taxation instead of excessive borrowing and an end to the harmful lending which puts countries into debt. Through the continued work of the Jubilee Debt Campaign (JDC) some $125 billion (£80 billion) of debt has been cancelled across 33 countries, resulting in improved spending on schools, health and social care. However, campaigners say that due to the immense suffering still being inflicted on impoverished people around the world, more action still needs to be taken.

Pray:

for the rich countries of the world, even in times of economic downturn, not to forget the even greater impact on many countries in huge debt and that their leaders will respond to the call for jubilee. (Lev.25:54)

Human rights 'agenda' is new totalitarianism, bishop warns judges

Laws originally designed to protect basic freedoms are instead being used to strip British society of its Christian foundations while upholding the rights of minorities. The warning, from a prominent Church of England bishop, comes as part of a landmark case on religious freedom in Britain to be heard at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg next week. In a powerful submission to the judges, the Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, warns of a distorted ‘human rights agenda’ which he likens to the atheist communist regimes in Eastern Europe which also suppressed Christianity by preventing public manifestations of faith. Unless basic Christian values are upheld, human rights will become ‘another inhuman ideology’, like the totalitarian regimes of the past, suppressing individuals, he says. The case is being brought by four workers including Shirley Chaplin, and Nadia Eweida, who were denied the right to wear a cross at work as a visible manifestation of their faith. (See 'Europe) item below)

Pray:

for this case and that the references to religious freedom in Human Rights will be reasserted (Jos.24:15)

Study links teen cannabis use with lower IQ

Teenagers who regularly use cannabis could be permanently impairing their mental development and lowering their IQ, according to a major new study. Researchers found that heavy users who started regularly using the drug before the age of 18 suffered an average eight-point decline in IQ between adolescence and adulthood. Users were also found to have more problems with their attention span and memory than non-users. Dr Madeline Meier, who led the study, said the message was clear that the drug ‘is not harmless, particularly for adolescents’. She added: ‘Somebody who loses eight IQ points as an adolescent may be disadvantaged compared to their same-age peers for years to come.’ The study was based on more than 1,000 people in New Zealand. The study revealed: ‘Persistent cannabis use was associated with neuropsychological decline broadly across domains of functioning, even after controlling for years of education. Informants also reported noticing more cognitive problems for persistent cannabis users.

Pray:

that the authorities would seriously note the results of this study and take action to reverse these statistics.

Four Christians accusing employers of discrimination

Christians who lost employment tribunals for discrimination in the workplace took their fight to the European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday. Their stories centre around whether religious principles have a place in the modern British workplace. When civil partnerships were legalised in 2004, Marriage registrar Miss Lillian Ladele refused to conduct them saying it was against her religious beliefs. Relationship councillor Mr McFarlane was sacked by Relate after objecting to giving sex therapy guidance to same-sex couples. Ms Eweida went home from a job with British Airways after she refused to conceal her silver cross necklace which breached uniform policy. Former nurse Mrs Chaplin was also asked not to display her cross necklace by the NHS Trust because the necklace breached health and safety guidelines. Mrs Chaplin had worn the cross necklace on the wards for 30 years.

Pray:

that the judgement of the European Court will be led by the Holy Spirit and not by man. (Pr.1:5)

Budapest: Youngsters seek united, peaceful world

Over 12,000 youngsters from some 100 nations have concluded Central and Eastern Europe's first-ever 'Genfest', a youth summit, with a call for a more united and peaceful world. After three days of exchanging ideas on how to realize that utopia, they prayed and listened in front of Budapest's Saint Stephen's Basilica, one of Hungary's largest Roman Catholic Church buildings. During Sunday's open air Mass they were encouraged not to give up their hope and dreams. The Vatican's ambassador to Hungary, the Apostolic Nuncio Alberto Bottari de Castello reminded the participants of this year's Genfest theme: 'Let's Bridge'. He said, ‘Christ is the true bridge between people and God,’ and ‘the Lord wants us to carry out that message as bridges of love towards all people.’

Pray:

for all the young people who attended that they will have met with Christ the true bridge between people and God. (Is.42:5-7)

Iran: Youcef Nadarkhani’s imprisonment ignored

Last week a Jewish advocacy group, the American Jewish Committee (AJC), urged Iran's Non-Alignment Movement summit to address the plight of Iranian pastor Youcef Nadarkhani, who has been imprisoned for over 1,000 days due to his Christian faith. The summit served as a platform for Iran to gain international support during tough sanctions levied against it by many western countries and bolster its relationships with North Korea, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Sudan. AJC implored United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to ‘emphatically speak out in support of Pastor Nadarkhani's freedom’ arguing that Iran is violating its own constitution, as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, by holding Nadarkhani for more than 1,000 days on charges of apostasy and attempting to evangelize Muslims.

Pray:

against Iran’s harassment of Christians, religious minorities, human rights advocates and for the release of all prisoners of conscience. (Is.61:1b)

Sudan: Rescue effort launched

Barnabas Fund is to airlift 2,000 needy and vulnerable Christians stranded in Sudan to safety and a new life in South Sudan. The first of 12 chartered flights are due to leave Khartoum for Juba on September 7th. Approximately 800 women (two-thirds are widows and 1,200 children) will be transported from makeshift shelters in flood conditions to the South. They are among hundreds of thousands of people of Southern origin who remain trapped in Sudan, having been stripped of their citizenship after the South voted to secede. Many have now made their own way to South Sudan but the poorest and most vulnerable do not have the resources. As well as being impoverished, Christians in Sudan are extremely vulnerable, as Islamist President Omar al-Bashir has made it clear that they are not welcome and repeatedly declared his intention to make the next constitution 100% Islamic and strengthen sharia law.

Pray:

for the most vulnerable to be able to reach their extended families in the South and that NGO’s will be able to help with their practical needs. (Ps.132:15)

Pakistan: Possible blasphemy law debate

An unexpected twist in the Rimsha Masih blasphemy case appears to have paved the way for her freedom from false charges of desecrating the Quran. The imam who supported her accuser was himself arrested and appeared in court on the same charge as the girl because he tampered with evidence. The case triggered a debate on how Pakistan’s strict blasphemy laws are being used to settle personal scores and vendettas. Most blasphemy cases registered against Muslims and Christians involve very poor people, the most vulnerable. There are never cases of blasphemy lodged against the Zoroastrians (Parsis) because they are the most educated and prosperous community in Pakistan. The highest number of cases against non-Muslim people are against Christians, who are the poorest and least educated when compared with other religious communities. There is a need to address the rising persecution against Christians.

Pray:

for an abolition of the anti-blasphemy laws across Pakistan and wise judgement by those in authority. (Ps.58:11)

Canada: humanist attempts to force Gideons out of schools

A humanist in Canada is seeking to stop the Gideons from distributing free copies of the Bible in schools. Rene Chouinard says it is biased for the Bible to be distributed but not free atheist literature. He offered some free atheist material to schools, hoping that it would result in ending the Bible distribution. He said it was not his intention to hand out truckloads of literature, he just wanted to force the school board to ‘show its hand.’ His campaign began in 2010. Now, the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal has agreed to hear his case. Mr Chouinard welcomed the decision, saying: ‘We would like to see religion completely removed from the classroom.’

USA: Obama and Romney - rare glimpse of spiritual lives

Democrat President Barack Obama says it's not his job to defend his Christian faith against doubters who suspect he's Muslim. His Republican Party challenger Mitt Romney says religion is ‘integral’ to his life - he often avoids mentioning his Mormon faith by name. The men responded in writing to nine questions about their faith. Religion has been a tricky political issue for both men. A recent Pew Research Centre poll found that 49% of Americans correctly identify Obama as a Christian. More Americans know that Romney is Mormon, but 30% do not believe that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Christian. Both men said that political candidates should be judged by their works not faith. Both also said that religion is central to their lives.
