Florida University Issues Apology after Student Refuses to "Stomp on Jesus"
Aimee Herd (Mar 27, 2013)

"Anytime you stomp on something it shows that you believe that something has no value. So if you were to stomp on the word Jesus, it says that the word has no value." –Ryan Rotela

Jesus paper (Florida)—The Florida university that was recently in the headlines for a controversial lesson that included "stomping" on Jesus' name, has issued an official apology, according to a Christian Post report. (Photo: WPEC-TV video)

"This exercise will not be used again. The University holds dear its core values. We sincerely apologize for any offense this caused. Florida Atlantic University respects all religions and welcomes people of all faiths, backgrounds and beliefs," read the statement on the university's website.

Last week it was reported by several media that Florida Atlantic University student Ryan Rotela had been suspended for his refusal to take part in a so-called "lesson" that had students write the name of Jesus onto a piece of paper, put it on the floor, and "stomp" on it.

The exercise came out of the textbook, "Intercultural Communication: a Contextual Approach, 5th Edition."

Ryan Rotella "Anytime you stomp on something it shows that you believe that something has no value," Rotela, a junior at FAU told the local media. "So if you were to stomp on the word Jesus, it says that the word has no value." (Photo: Ryan Rotella/MyFoxAtlanta)

At the time the teacher gave the assignment, Rotela reportedly refused, telling him, "With all due respect to your authority as a professor, I do not believe what you told us to do was appropriate."

Dr. Deandre Poole, overseer of the class, had noted that the "lesson" was meant to encourage debate.
