JERUSALEM, Israel -- The Egyptian army kept up the pressure on the Muslim Brotherhood Tuesday with the arrest of its spiritual leader, Mohammed El Badie.
The arrest comes after 25 Egyptian police officers were murdered execution style in the Sinai Peninsula.
Badie's arrest is another blow to the Islamist group. Egyptian police are charging him with incitement in the deaths of eight protestors in June.
In 2012, the Simon Wiesenthal Center chose Badie as its top anti-Semite when he called for "holy jihad" against the Jews.
Earlier, authorities returned the remains of the 25 police officers to Cairo. Officials said the terrorists stopped the two buses transporting the officers, ordered them on the ground and shot them. The massacre highlighted the anarchy in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
"Indeed we believe there are al Qaeda combatants right now in the Sinai and they'll be in other places as well," Foundation for Defense of Democracies President Cliff May said. "When you have this kind of anarchy, chaos and carnage we're seeing right now in Egypt and in Syria and not so great places like Somalia, you're getting to a very dangerous situation."
Meanwhile in Cairo, a court ordered the release of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, but it appears he will remain in custody for two more weeks pending a judicial review.
When Mubarak was in power, he warned about the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamic groups.
"… These groups -- don't ever believe that they want democracy or anything like that," CBN News contributing reporter Raymond Ibrahim quoted Mubarak as saying. "They are exploiting democracy in order to eliminate democracy. And if they ever do govern, it will be an ugly dictatorship…."
According to one Israeli newspaper, the United States is secretly planning to cut military aid to Egypt pending a review.
A former Israeli diplomat told CBN News the current regime wants to be pro-Western, but if Europe and the U.S. cut aid, Russian President Vladimir Putin will gladly offer help to the Arab world's most influential nation.
He said he can't understand the support the U.S. and Europe are giving the Muslim Brotherhood, which he says has declared war on the West.
An Israeli official told CBN News he believes Europe and the U.S. should continue to support the military-backed government since it is Egypt's only hope for preventing further chaos and restoring stability.
