Wesley D Paul - Reports from Kenya

Sunday, August 21st. 2005

Bungoma, Kenya. “Let’s go where the people are,” said pastor Jackson Ongeri. He took me to the market grounds in Bungoma. Vendors of every sort were hawking their ware. Women selling vegetables, cooking utensils and kitchen wares. On the side were also several men selling sunglasses, belts, phone accessories and a variety of other non-essentials. Under several empty stalls, people were packed in and others just stood around to listen to the songs belted out by the women from the church. It is hard to sit still and listen to the music, people end up dancing and clapping their hands. The crowd was having a jolly good time singing and dancing. One dear chap, he appeared to be drunk, danced the chicken dance and got everyone laughing. After a few remarks and introduction the pastor turned it over to me.

I spoke on the Parable of the Prodigal Son. God gave the Word a fresh anointing and it went out clearly and powerfully. When I gave the invitation twenty one souls stepped forward to make a commitment to Christ. After the counseling, the pastor shared with me that though there were not a lot of souls that came forward, the ones that came forward, had a genuine experience of conversion and change.

Richard finds peace

Richard a man of 45 came to meeting because he was restless. He stepped out of his house hoping he would go somewhere and find some peace. When he saw the meeting, he thought to himself, this can’t hurt, I will stay for a while. But as he lingered on he felt peace and very inclined to remain to the end. In the last few weeks Richard has come upon some hard times, and as I preached about the Prodigal son, he could relate to what I was saying. Richard’s wife became weary of his waywardness and drunken lifestyle, one fine day she took her children and left him. He couldn’t face the loss and live in an empty home. He packed his things and moved to Bungoma. He related to one of the counselors that his stress and rage was leading him to thoughts of murdering his wife. It is a good thing he came to meeting. A major crime now has been averted as a result of his salvation. What a Savior! Hallelujah!!

After praying with the counselor, Richard beamed with joy and acknowledged the peace he felt in his heart. He left the grounds praising God for the peace and new purpose he has found in his life.

I also talked to two young men, the 23 year old was studying civil engineering and the 20 year old was studying to be a teacher. Both these bright young men gave their hearts to Christ for the first time. I asked them what prompted them to come forward. One of them said, “ I knew I must come down and give my life, because I felt in my heart a moving, a conviction that I was way in the bottom, as a sinner.” I am glad the power of the gosple still works on young people (not that I doubt it).

I also talked to a lady who is a vendor of greens, she too trusted Christ and asked us to pray that her husband would pray to receive Christ.

Earlier in the day, I addressed the congregation at the Sunday Service about True Change and Repentance. A call was given to recommitment and personal revival. More than 50 stepped forward to pray at the altar. Many prayed with tears and great sorrow over their sins. Silas, a young man came to me following the service and stated that he had praying for revival, and today he felt that God had really moved in his church. I rejoiced in the answer to his prayer and took note that he was the first one to come forward and get on his knees when the invitation was given.

Monday, August 22nd

Today I preached during the Lunch Hour at the Market. After the church group sang, a crowd gathered around. I got up on the rough hewn wooden platform which was constructed literally a few minutes earlier. I talked about the Adulterous woman who was brought before Jesus in John 8th chapter. It illustrated how God deals with sin. Seven souls came forward to make commitments. Counselors took them aside and counseled each of them. Not a bad harvest over the course of a Lunch Hour.

This evening I was once again taken to the Market to preach. I preached on Deliverance from sin, citing the illustration of Demon Possessed man from Mark 5th chapter. Thirty people came forward to allow Christ to transform them. Wycliff, a young man of 25 years came forward, as I visited with him, I learned that he was at the Lunch Hour but didn’t make a decision. He realized that he needed to make a decision so he returned in the evening. Obviously the hound of heaven was after him until he made a commitment.

As you can see, God is doing a great thing here and I am thrilled to be in the middle of all the excitement. I am glad I am here and that you sent me. I find my own heart being warmly renewed and revived. May God raise up the temperature several degrees and send the fire. Oh, that would be fantastic. Perhaps in Uganda where more than 1000 pastors and leaders will join for the international Conference. After I finish speaking at Bungoma, I will be heading to Kabale, Uganda. Pray for me while I harvest here and for the ministry in Uganda.

Thank you again for praying for me and financially sponsoring me to reach the people o Kenya and Uganda. I want to thank the Lexington Chinese Church especially, when I was not sure how I was going to go on this mission, they raised $1600 in a week’s time. My thanks to many others who made similar effort to help me on this mission. May God bless you richly and increase your riches both in earth and heaven.
